It is definitely a scam. Most of those checks for this type of scam is coming from west African countries such as Nigeria. It is not wise to cash the check nor call the number because that may give them the opportunity to get your phone number and other personal info. I would report it to the police immediately. This type of scam is one of the hardest to track because they move from place to place and they use cyber cafes to get into underground chat rooms where personal information is sold such as ssn, phone numbers, addresses, credit/debit card numbers and bank account numbers. So you shouldn't cash this check because it could come back on you and you would have to pay several fees and it would be feeding this scam.

You should consider to try this service ( http://reversephones.info ) It's a cheap service that works great! It could be used for a much deeper search. You can use it to get hold of different varieties of background reports, and in addition cell numbers, addresses and names.. you can get unlimited reports... I ran with this because I required to verify more numbers. You can get the name, other phone number, address history, relatives, and much more about anyone! The completly free reverse phone lookup generally doesn't provide anything interesting. To get interesting information, money will must be paid. The free searches don't provide considerably more than what may be found through the phone directory or personal information and they simply require your email to send spam. The reverse phone detective search tool does work, but you should use just the service that I posted above. The last thing you want to do, is pay for a service and find the numbers you want to lookup are not available in their directory. The service that I reccomend doesn't have any kind of problem , you won't get any bad surprise! Trust it!

It is a scam, just like all the other notifications that say you won a big prize in some lottery that you never entered. You can send the check and letter to the police or attorney general if you want to take the time, but under no circumstance should you call the number or cash the check.

that's a scam. OK in order to win money you would have to play like lottery that you have heard of before or play like one of those coke or Pepsi games that they do. OK the number to Canada maybe a real number for you to call so they can get your money. you will end up having to pay for something. if you did get a check like that in the mail you need to be letting the police know about it. if your questioning something like that how many other people ain't that smart to even ask they would go ahead and do it since it's money or not. take everything you got to the police. if it sounds to good to be true then it is. I wouldn't even waste my time with that it's junk put it in the shredder after you show it to the cops or they may just keep it. you will be helping alot of older people that fall victim to this stuff very easily.

Stop! It's a scam. Did you enter that sweepstakes????? No??? You can not win something you did not enter or play. And, you NEVER, ever have to pay any fee or charge for any real winnings from a legitimate contest. It is a scam to get your personal information and/or money. Do not respond to it. Report it to the postal service or the FBI, as sending fraudulent checks through the mail is a federal offense.

Check this web site. It is a great urban legend debunker or confirmer. Or Google some of the data on the letter and see if you get a hit confirming it is a scam.
If I did not enter the contest I would be very wary.
See the results of my Google search

Take this check to the police; they will deal with this. This happened to a person in our family. Do not cash the check. Do not ignore it. Go to the police. If you don't we will never be able to stop these scam artists.

A reverse cell lookup service I have utilized is http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=538
Enter the number in the framework and they will let you know a great deal of informations about the telephone number and the person who claims it.
In the event that they have extra subtle elements you will need to pay for the report. If you need to reverse lookup one phone or area line telephone number you will be charged about $15 yet in the event that you have to reverse lookup more than one telephone or cell number you can get a years access to their database.
Free reverse telephone lookup destinations generally provide the most essential of information, for example, name and it works just for landlines. To get further information, cash will must be paid. The free searches don't provide considerably more than what might be found through the telephone directory.
The best thing is that you can get informations about anybody!! A reverse cell phone lookup service I have used is http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=538

ITS A SCAM! DONT put that check any where near your bank account! Somehow they are able to trace the check and they ill drain your account and gather enough info to steal your identity. This is NO JOKE! The same thing happened to my bf. He was afraid of them being able to trace it so he opened up a new account...he got arrested and was interrogated on no end!!

Yes, it's a scam.
When you cash the cheque, it'llbounce, but not before it goes to the fake bank they've set up.
They'll have your name, address, bank, account number and your signature - everything the need to steal your identity.
And they'll start taking out mortgages in your name.
