My brother has been living with me for the last 1 1/2 year. He has only worked maybe for 2 month at most of the last year. He does not pay any money at all to live here not even for food. Does this make him a dependent he is 23. Just wanted to know if I could claim him & if it would be worth it to do so. I have always done my own taxes & have absolutly no idea how to go about something like this.

Won a poker tournament on a cruise ship. I have no losses or no other winnings for last year, just the $1300. Do I have to report this on my taxes or is this winnings below the threshold to report and qualifies me to be exempt? Second part of question is, since I won on a cruise ship and a cruise ship is foreign territory since it is registered in the Bahamas, does that come into play with reporting gambling winnings on foreign soil?

We received my husbands w’2 ( only one income ) and went ahead and gave it to a lady who was doing our taxes. After it was already sent off we received a 1099 of non-employee compensation of 5k. For 2006. My husband has been with his company since November of 2005. So apparently we werent expecting this therefor we didnt wait on it.
What can we do if taxes were already sent out and yet still stand here with a 1099 ?
Tried calling our tax lady and she’s not picking up and im starting to really worry.
Thanks.

I mistakenly transposed a digit on the withholding section and am afriad that this will delay my return. When does the IRS receive tax withholding records my my employers for 2006? Could this possibly be overlooked until later in the year so I can receive my return in time?

My husband works for a company where they have an employee outreach program to help tragedy stricken employees. The employees have the option to have any amount deducted from their check. My husband doesn't think that this is a "true" deduction because it's within the company. But these "donations" helped the employees that were victims of katrina? What do you think?

Mid December I took a job in which I home office (live and work) in KY. My employer is in PA. There was a mistake and my only 2006 paycheck from this co. covering one week of work withheld PA taxes instead of KY. Since I neither work nor live in PA I shouldn't pay PA taxes on this income but I should pay KY taxes. But somehow I need to get the money PA has in its pocket over to KY. How can I do this? (Employer says at this point they can fix 2007 retroactive to the beginning of the year but that one week of income that shows as PA can't be fixed.)

Note: I'm looking for "positive" statement that a direct rollover is allowed - i'm sure its allowed by the IRS - i just can't locate anything saying its allowed - in summary - does the IRS actually come out & say u can rollover 401k monies while you're at your current employer? Thanks in advance.

I got married in April of 2006. My wife came from a state that did not have a state income tax. I live in a state that does. Once we got married, she moved to my state. My question is, does she have to pay state income tax from the day we got married to the end of the year, or does she have to pay for the whole year ?

I am on an international assignment and getting meals and incidentals per diem allowance set according to the US Federal Govt rates. However, I am not using the entire amount i.e., I am able to save some of it. Is this saved amount taxable?? Consider the following facts:
1. This is an accountable plan
2. Per diem amount is not reported on W2
3. When I checked pub 463, this example was given which means I don't need to report anything:"In April, Jeremy takes a 2-day
business trip to Denver. The federal rate for
Denver is $173 per day. As required by his
employer’s accountable plan, he accounts for
the time (dates), place, and business purpose of
the trip. His employer reimburses him $173 a
day ($346 total) for living expenses. Jeremy’s
living expenses in Denver are not more than
$173 a day. Jeremy’s employer does not include any of
the reimbursement on his Form W-2 and Jeremy
does not deduct the expenses on his return."

If I understood this wrongly, how does one report this? Tax form??
