While in college I didn't work. I did get a scholarship. Didn't pay attention to the tax docs issued from those since I figured standard deductions would handle it, zero tax.

2005, did work some, very little. So again I thought standard deductions would make it zero tax liability. I assumed for 05 that no one was claiming me as a dependent. I found out this year, that was incorrect.

So how do I begin fixing this? I don't have any tax docs from before 05. How bad will penalties be?

Hubby was deployed because of this Iraq fiasco but served 12 mos. in the US at a base away from home.

On the 1040 they only list deployment in a combat zone.

I take it those who were deployed in the US away from home station dont qualify for any tax breaks.

Does anyone know the IRS rule on this? Thanks......

Hi, I live and work in New Jersey and I live as a tenant in an apartment complex. Am I eligible for the Property tax deduction/credit and/or the homestead rebate? How do I know if the property tax is being deducted from the rent? Also, do the entries UI/HC/WF and NJ DI in the box 14 of the W2 have to be entered anywhere while filing the NJ1040 OR 1040 For Federal?

I have used turbotax.com in the past but I was wondering if there were any sites that were a little cheaper and just as easy to use to file my taxes online. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I didn't file because I knew I made significantly less than the required minimum (like $1000 at the most) but I now realize that I did pay a lot of federal income tax. Is it too late to get that back if I didn't file?

I already did my taxes and two days after I did them I got 2 W-2's in the mail that I forgot I was going to get. I called the guy that did my taxes and he said to wait until I got my refund and then go back. Is there a way I can do it directly with the IRS? He is always booked and I don't want more time to pass. Thanks in advance.

I was helping my parents doing their tax return. They are getting a small refund from Federal, but nothing is owe or due on state. Do they still have to file the state? The state is Arizona by the way and they just moved there last year. Thanks :)

The situation, 2003 taxes prepared by H&R Block. An error was made on the local taxes and I took taxes back to them and they said they took care of it. Six months later I received another notice from local tax authority that they never recieved payment and were charging me fees, including sending the account to collections. But I never received a notice they were sending it to collections. Do I have any power to fight paying the collections charges since I received no notice? Further, H&R block will not pay anything! I have talked to managers, etc. Beware of them, their guarantee is faulty! This occured in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

In 2006 I did parttime studies, and moved into fulltime studies in 2007. I realize that not all tax programs and accountants are equal. What would you recommend that I do for my taxes? Will I get everything back if I am a student (i.e. expenses for a computer, textbooks, tuition in US dollars)?

My girlfriend wants me to claim her kids on her taxes.. I haven't done it yet, but she has sole custody and says she will go in and verify that she's giving me permission. I have lived with her for over a year and have provided for them kids for more than 7 months of that. Can I legally claim the children if they are not biologically mine if she gives me permission? Also if you do not know do you know what site would give me that information?

I live in Houston, Texas and I am thinking about refinancing my house. If I do it now I have to pay a prepayment penalty that is equal to 6 months worth of interest payments. Would the penalty be tax deductible?

I also understand that there are some laws that prevent mortgage companies from charging these penalties. Is there anyone out there that can point me in the right direction so that I can find out if my mortgage prepayment penalty is illegal? Preferrably someone who knows about Texas laws?
