I've heard that I'm able to deduct gas expenses, car repair, clothes I use for work and meals while at work. I'm under the impression this is only possible if I own a business. How much of this is correct?

I used Turbo Tax but I dont think it matters who you filed with, just in case it does, when answering if you used Turbo Tax too, please say so. Thanks. =)

Also I am not asking for an average, Im asking for a specific number of days based on an actual situation. I already know the average.

We moved from AZ to CA in 2006. Most of our income came from CA. On the CA State form there is a place to deduct wages earned from another state, however I don't see that on the AZ State form. Do I have to claim our CA wages on our AZ State form?

The federal government prints money. They pay off the debt with it. Printing money inflates the money supply. The value of the dollar goes down, savings devaluate as do investments.
Doesnt this mean that Inflation is a TAX?

it's kind of early to ask but i'd like to know ahead of time. i live in maryland and at the end of august i will be leaving for missouri for college. i know that for 2007 it will make me a maryland resident and a missouri nonresident. ok here is where i get confused:

i plan to maintain maryland residency. home, license, car registered to maryland, etc. i will have a part time job while in college. can i have w/h taken out for md instead of mo?

also in 2008 will i have to claim residency in both states since i spent all of my time in mo, then just use the credit for taxes paid to maryland?

i think i just confused myself even more lol =(

I did my fiance's taxes yesterday and I first put in his job that he got second, which was a little over $14,000 income, then I put in his job he had first (he quit this job when he got the $14,000 job in 2006) and the income on this job was about $5,600.

When I put in the $5,600 job, the refund dropped from $1,300 to $680! We were counting on at least $1,000 refund to pay off a credit card bill, and now it is much much less than we expected.

Is this right? I used turbotax. Last year I think he got back close to $900, and he had 3 jobs in that year. Is the government screwing you because you switched jobs???

The reason I'm asking is because I know that on Monday evenings they update their info and almost always on a Tuesday morning when you check your status, it will go from a general refund date to a more specific direct deposit date. I efiled my return on Feb 1 and according to the IRS efile chart for direct deposit, I should have my refund deposited on Feb 16. But, my status on the site still says Feb 20, which it has said for over a week now, and that is a Tuesday, and they only do direct deposits on Fridays. I am in limbo waiting, like a lot of you, (I know!) and wondering if maybe they have not updated their info yet?

We don't have a record of the material cost since it was done by a builer. I guess my question is what can we deduct from having our house built on a loan aside from mortgage interest? We paid the bank 400 for "construction fee" and 200 for "origination fee"(they're not stated on our 1098 so I'm not sure of their deductibility). We didn't pay any "points". Thanks..

I am a US citizen living in Sydney, Australia. I own two rental properties in the US and am having trouble completing my Federal tax returns (due to questions around depreciation and overseas income). This is my first year filing a tax return from Sydney and want to talk with someone. Any suggestions on who I can talk with or meet to get this resolved? I am not really comfortable working with someone from a search result.

Basically, I'm a full time web developer --that works from home-- in Florida for a small company in Michigan... and they deduct MI state tax from my pay.

I need to know the following before i approach them about this:

1. Are they suppose to be applying Michigan state income tax to my paychecks, when i live and work in Florida (no state income tax)?

and... 2. How would i go about getting a refund for the 1 year of MI state income tax they deducted from my pay?

Thanks

Anyone heard of the scam where HSBC calls people who havw e-filed and notifies them that the irs is auditing them and they have to pay back the loan? They called my brother today and told him he had to pay over $5k! He only got $2300! It seemed to be a little early for the irs to be auditing. I've never heard of this before.
