I have a friend who is unemployed and would be willing to let me claim her three children. Is this legal even though I only claim one on my W-2's? Also, I donated a car to an organization earlier this year and would like to know how that works? DO I get money taken off of what I owe...?? HELP!! Thanks~

Someone asked me if they could file separately while still married and get the earned income credit. Another question is what about if someone says they are separated?

I called IRS and was told my financee can infact claim me. However the man I spoke with said to fill out page 18 of publication 501 to determine if my financee paid more then half of my daughters support. He told me to just print it out and do it in my own time prior to filing so we knew for sure.
After filling it out it is determined he can in fact claim her but how do we PROVE what we paid for food, heat, electricity, travel expenses. clothing and such is what we actually paid. I dont keep track of what he spends on her I mean who actually keeps all the receipts from travel expenses to DR's, clothing, food, entertainment and such?

Furthermore while talking to this man who was friendly but put me on hold for a while he said that they do infact count her childsupport and SSI {disability}as "income" even though its non taxable? Is this correct? When I was working and claiming my daughter I NEVER ONCE claimed her SSI or Childsupport I was told I didnt have to it was not counted

What are the benefits of each? This is our first year to file as a married couple. I read some other questions that suggest you get more benefits for filing jointly.

Should it list the county you LIVE in, or the county you WORK in?

We live in one county, but work in another. My W-2's list the county we live in, but his list the one he works in.

Does one of them need to be fixed, and if so, which one?

I bought a high-powered laptop in late 2005, originally for a business venture. That business venture failed, so the laptop (for a period of maybe 2 months into the beginning of 2006) became a personal laptop. For the remainder of the year, however, I used my laptop as my primary business tool (I'm a software/web developer) for non-independent (W-2) work. In other words, I used my laptop on-site with the clients for which I worked for approximately 10 of the 12 months of 2006. Can I claim the cost (or a portion of the cost) as some kind of deduction?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Tim

...and all of the smart people, why do we still have governments, such as cities, that cry and complain about low funds and not enough money and raising taxes?

20 years ago, I thought that our future would gain a lot from all of this wisdom and such. We are deeper in the hole.

I think maybe they see the surface (the politicians) and don't know how to save money. Spend it all now and worry about tomorrow... ...well, tomorrow. My 9 year-old kid knows better.

An old city like mine has old plumbing and bridges. Heh, they all "go" at the same time, yet nobody sees this. I do.

My city has one of the highest wage taxes in the USA, they add an extra annual "occupation TAX". There is an entertainment tax. There are "Household burglar alarm" fees - another tax to protect your home. Soon they may want a Television tax per TV (I'm being sarcastic on this one).

All of my utility bills have extra fees and taxes.

I'm debating on goin to HRBlock this year. We usually do, but I'm not sure if our return will be worth it this year. One job had 10%taken out for taxes, just worked out that way. $10,000 gross, 1,000 taken out, give a few dollars. Then I have a small business with 6,000 gross, and a job of 1200.00 w/ nothin taken out and another job of about 5,000 w/ no taxes taken out either. i have a spouce and 2 kids to claim. anyone think the return will be big enough for it to be worth paying a tax company so I can walk out w/ a check?
