What do charitable donations do for you if you're getting money back?

Assuming that you have enough itemized deductions to make itemizing worth while, charitable donations will increase your refund a bit. If you don't itemize, they do nothing for you tax-wise.

They expand what you are getting, assuming you itemize. If you do not, there is not tax benefit.
