When I opened this Fund, I put my name and my niece name on it with our social security numbers.

I know that by doing this I would be paying 18% tax (with no NI). But is this true? There must some pitfalls, otherwise everyone would become a subcontractor. Thanks

My dad sold his home after living there for 20+ years and bought a condo. 6 months later he sold that condo and bought a bigger condo for slightly more money (no capital gains at all with that sale). He's now lived in this last condo for 2 years but needs to sell it because we have to move him into assisted living. (He's lived by himself for all this time). We were told by his accountant that he would avoid the capital gains tax if he occupied his home for at least 2 years. But I've read some articles that say one has to own the home 5 years and occupy it for 2 of those years. What's the right anwer??

For the past three months i have been paying BR tax code. After numerous phone calls to the tax office and my payroll they have finally issued me with 503L, then i was told that next pay will be on a month one basis (which i assume will show as 503L M1?). And apparently i will not be getting my rebate. What does this mean? Will i have to pay excess tax again? Or less? And what about after that?

Additional Details

I do have another part-time job. The revenue had actually sent me notification that my fulltime job will be on 503L so i rang payroll to make sure they have recieved it too... they hadnt... so i had to call the revenue to fax it over ... twice. The last time i called my employers payroll they said the months will be on a month one basis. I still dont understand the cumultative/non cumulative process. Its all too confusing!

I am trying to calculate how much tax I need to be paying each year. I was looking at the IRS website at the income tax rates. It says filing as married, jointly for 2007 is $1,565.00 plus 15% of the amount over 15,650 for incomes between $15,650 and $63,700. Does income tax refer to only the federal withholding or everything combined (federal + state + medicare + oasdi + etc..)? If I anticipate making $63000 for 2007 in the state of Texas, how much total taxes should I expect to pay (this includes federal withholding, oasdi, medicare, and any other applicable taxes)? I want to know exactly how much I should expect per pay check (bi-weekly) if I have the exact amount of taxes withheld per paycheck so that at the end of the year I neither owe the IRS or have a refund.

I just purchased a coat that is over $110 in NY but would like to return it in NJ where I live. Will I get a full refund in sales tax ? A friend of mine just told me that the sales tax will not be refunded if I return an item over $110 from NY to NJ.

Please help!

Thanks...

I was wondering, since almost everything in life now you have to pay taxes for to the state/country. Like the pavement you walk on.
The money you earned, the water you use, even the air you breath.

What things in life you do not have to pay taxes for to the country you're in?

I live with my partner and our daughter. She is 2. My partner has a full time job. We have heard he can claim tax credits for both myself and my daughter. What does this mean? Does it count that we are not married. I know I am losing out on the homemakers allowance because we are not married. (which I think is so unfair). I have a medical card (for both myself and my daughter) because we are in the low wage bracket, but am not on any social benefits. I receive no payment from the government. My partner earns approx 390 euro weekly. Can anyone tell me how the tax allowance works. thanks

I know that by filing as married, you get more back on your pay check. Does it even out at the end when tax time comes around? Does the benefit of having a bigger pay check require me to pay more back to the government come tax time or vice versa? If so, does that mean the only benefit as filing as married as opposed to single is placement in the tax brackets?

I am about to go into partnership with a friend of mine. He is a painter/decorator and when we were looking at the local adverts of other painters we noticed that most were CIS registered. From what i can gather this is only relevant if the person is going to be a sub-contractor, which my friend is not going to be (he will be an employed director of the company). Is this correct or does he have to be (or the compnay) CIS registered no matter what?
