You can replace your Social Security card if it is lost or stolen. You are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during your lifetime. Legal name changes and changes in noncitizen status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship.

Most citizens have social security cards as babies now so that parents can claim them as dependents on taxes. If you are a citizen, and do not have a card, you would need to take some form (better two than one) of identification to the local Social Security office. Birth certificates, driver's license, other picture ID might be helpful. A birth certificate OR driver's license may be all you need. You will fill out a form - it is free - and in a few weeks your card will be mailed to you. If you need proof that you have applied for a new card or you need proof of your social security number, ask the clerks at the office. They can give you a computer printout showing your card number and a letter stating that you have applied. (In case you have a job waiting on verification or something and need one quickly.)
