My former income was $48,000 per year, now it is $7200 per year and there are no similar jobs with matching salary in my area. I would like to cash out my 401k in 2007 and would like to know the penalties invoved.
My wife's salary is in the mid 30k and i have enrolled in a nursing course, but will not graduate until December 2007. My 401k balance is $24,000 and I am 45 years old.
Can anyone help?

A question for all of you advisers & planners out there...

Should a 24 year old couple save money in a retirement account (after normal 401k contributions) like a Roth IRA or use that money to invest in a safe money market account to get to the 3-6 month level of savings financial professionals say you need in case of an emergency. One other thing to note is that this couple has principal currently sitting in Roths > 5 years, so money can be withdrawn from the Roths tax & penalty-free in case of an emergency.

I may be answering my own question, but I wanted to get other perspectives on this issue.

Would you contact the bank? Would you let they figure out they make the mistake and keep the money or use it until them? What else?

I'm perfectly dumb at this. I need to deposit checks at washington mutual, and I have the checks and my ATM card. Is this number (or series of numbers) on my ATM card the same as my bank account #?

My credit union recently charges me with $100 of NSF fees. On 8/30 I checked my accout online and my balance was 35.00. I made a deposit of $300 the following morning (8/31). They gave me a print out showing my acct. balance of $335.00. The day of the deposit I logged on to the bank website to check my accout and it never showed any checks that cleared. Today, 9/1, I logged on and there are four checks that posted on 8/30 and four NSF fees charged on 8/31. I think they should refund the NSF fees because at the time of my deposit I was under the impression that I had made the deposit intime to cover the checks I had written, what do you think I should do? This is not the first time this has happened.

My husband and I were married in January I was wondering how this effects our taxes at the end of the year? Will it be beneficial? Or hurt us? We are both claiming zero right now on our w-4s so the most money possible is taken out. The other thing is I make a lot more money than he does, we're talking like double the money, can I claim head of household, or does that only apply to children? Any suggestions? Please also no smart remarks I'm tired of people being jerks.

Just found out my credit union approved me for a home equity line of credit up to 50k. I'm new with all this. How can I creatively use this type of loan to my advantage? In other words, how can I make more money?

I don't pay a mortage. I helped my mom-refinance last year. She has bad credit, so I co-signed for her. After I did that, my credit union approved me for the loan.

I'm planning to enter a fitness contest and the winner receives a total of $50,000 in prizes which includes $40,000 cash, fitness equipment, and health supplements. Do the taxes have to be paid by the winner upfront, are they taken out of the prize money, or are the taxes paid at the end of the year? I may not be able to afford to even win the contest. LOL Too funny.
