take it to a bank, most likely, it's from american express and it's not really a gift.

take it to american express and ask them
go to a bank and maybe they can answer
once you turn it to cash, I'd say it was pretty good
don't pay in advance for it

Call the 800 number on the back of it and give them the check number, and amount. They'll tell you if it's good.
