I requested a copy of my credit report when I moved house as I used to move around different addresses annually as a student. Anyway, I got it through and found that there was a defaulted bank account and credit card in my name on there with a bank that I've never been with. Investigating further, the accounts appear to have gone to a collection agency and paid off fully. Because of this, the police can't help me, and the bank is being totally unhelpful as it's been closed off (I think it's just a bank admin error, and they won't admit that they made a mistake!).

How on earth do I get this removed from my credit record, as it's the only thing on an unblemished record, and I'm concerned that it will affect things for me in the future! Also am worried that it might set me up for possible fraud attempts if someone has my details.

like i said im 17 and half years old, i will turn 18 in 6 months when i will go off to college. My question is what are the best steps for me to follow to try and create very good credit for myself, My dad and mom both have very high credit scores but thats over a period of 20 years what would be a good start for me? creating a buisness? credit cards? any ideas would be greatly appreciated, aswell as any "dont do's" ( BTW getting a cosigner on any credit cards etc will not be a problem as i have a credit card of my own now through my mothers name and ive been paying it ontime for the past year)
thanks

The collection agency told me that I could not pay both, yet the company I owe money to said that if I could submit a certain amount, he would cancel the collection agency's pursuit of collecting the debt.

So, is it against the law to make a payment to him after I have made an agreement with the agency? And can the company actually cancel the request to collect the debt?

Living in Singapore temporarily and have a number of credit cards issued by local banks. If I fall behind on payments or can't pay...will the debts follow me back to the US. I have no plans to return to Singapore and they don't have my social security number.

Okay, I've got a power bill from Hell to take care of (413.04) and my fiancee doesn't have a job and can't stop blowing every damn penny he gets, so it's up to me to fix things. We live in a small town---very small, like Deliverance small, and I can't get a job here that well without a college education. We've tried going to Social Services for help with the bill, but it's in my dad's name and I haven't seen him in a couple of years now--we just pay it in his name because getting in with the power company is like joining a cult (you have to know someone who's getting their power from them and have them sign then pay a copayment and all that rediculous jazz). Family isn't helping. My mom is a psychopath who can't even take care of her own family and my grandparents have their own financial problems. I'm only 19 and I've tried almost everything but getting a loan. I'm afraid of them because of the crazy interest rates and the credit thing. I need help-badly. It's like...entropy...

I've heard financial advisors talk about consalidating all debts into a 0%apr credit card. But if i need to consalidate my debts evidently my credit isnt the cleanest thing on earth and getting a credit card with a 0% apr is almost impossible with my creditscore. What other options are there? Companies that offer consolidation have an apr that is so high it just puts you in even more debt. I feel stuck. Somebody please help!

When I was young and naive, I had 10 credit cards. Half of them I paid off, but the other half were sent to collections where they have been languishing. While in collections, they have been accumulating more debt due to late fees and other assorted nonsense (some collection agencies have added twice what the original credit limit was). I attempted to start paying them off 4 years ago but found I wasn't getting anywhere. Although this is not the right thing to do, it is my understanding if you don't pay for a certain number of years (determined by each state), these blips on your credit report disappear. I would like to start paying off the companies directly, but the collection agencies make that impossible. Is the myth that these things get magically erased from your credit report true or am I in big trouble?

and it has been on there for 5 years and the verdict is not in my favor, will the date of last activity for this start over from now? If it is going to drop off in two years, I'm tempted to let it be. But, I don't think it is right so maybe I should fight it. I would hate if it started over and I'm stuck with it for another 7 years. I don't know if a dispute counts as activity.

I went to the bank today and he was very rude and said i have had 17 overdraft fee's in the last year and that's why there is a hold and insuance companies are notorious for stopping payment on a check and i was like well i have already spoke with an account holder from allstate saying the check already cleared.... and he said well you have had too many overdraft fee's and you have to wait.... what is the deal???

I know that when buying stuff at the counter i can use the credit option, then the merchant will place a hold on my fund.
then few days later they will officially deduct the amount.

now my question is:
say i have $100 in my check account.

day 1: I want to buy a $90 dollar item at one place with credit.
go to another shop to buy a $50 dollar item.
day 2: deposit money to cover all the charges.
day 3: those merchants deduct the money and i'm fine.

the thing is on day 1, would my card still work at the second shop?
I've already used $90 and dont have enough money for the $50, would the card still go through with the credit option?
how fast do they put the hold, and is the holded money still spentable?

Ok, I'm planning to send my first payment on a settlement offer a collection office has arranged with me for a past due debt(pending two details). They are also waiving the interest.

Everyone I've spoken to, says they've never heard of a collection office providing such a generous amount of time to pay off a past due debt, with such low monthly payments($50).

Have others been offered arrangements like this, and after the debt was paid, that was the end of it? Or is it just that people who have had bad experiences with collectors speak the loudest and most often which makes this arrangement seem unusual?

This debt is four years old, and the SOL is 10 years. However, as long as I'm making payments as scheduled, the agreement says there will be no action to sue or sell the account. By the way, I hope to pay off the debt in 5-7 years, though the written agreement gives me much longer.
