I know someone who inherited real estate properties even though nobody in her family died. Is this possible?
I thought you inherit things when somebody in your family dies.

Thank you in advance.

Also,to check the house for mold, etc.? Do I call the health department or who? Who is responsible for making sure an apartment/house is up to code? Will I get in trouble if I tell my landlord that I won't pay the rent unless he has the air vents cleaned and the whole place checked out? I don't have a lease so there's no way for me to know if anything like that would be covered. In addition,I just asked my landlord how old the carpet is and he said about 9 years old and he said if it needs to be cleaned,it's our responsibility. Also, can someone please confirm or not what my friend just told me as I'm typing this that the people to call are either the Housing Department or my city's Code Compliance office?!? What is the Housing Department(or whatever it's actually called?) Are they city, county, state or federal? Also,I should mention that this is all happening in Florida!! Last thing-If an inspection said that work needed to be done and we had to move, could landlord help pay for move?!?

President Signs AMT Patch

On December 26, President Bush signed the Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2007 [HR 3996]. The legislation was passed to prevent an estimated 25 million taxpayers from becoming subject to AMT. The Act increases the AMT exemption amount for 2007 to $66,250 for married individuals filing jointly and surviving spouses, $44,350 for single taxpayers and taxpayers filing as heads of households, and $33,125 for married couples filing separately. The new law allows taxpayers to use most nonrefundable personal tax credits to offset AMT liability.

Now that the AMT patch has been signed into law, the big question is how the late timing of this change will impact the upcoming filing season. - The IRS just announced that for most taxpayers, the late passage will not impact their ability to file early in the season, beginning in mid-January. However, approximately 3 to 4 million taxpayers will be impacted and will not be able to file until February 11. The delay is the result of the system programming changes that need to be made at IRS to process returns that have any of the following forms to submit with their return:

1. Form 8863, Education Credits.
2. Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits.
3. Form 1040A's Schedule 2, Child and Dependent Care Expenses for Form 1040A filers.
4. Form 8396, Mortgage Interest Credit.
5. Form 8859, District of Columbia First-Time Homebuyer Credit.

my nan died 0n the 24th of august 2007, my grandad received about 3 payments for her in september, he took them to the local jobcentre and gave them back he also told them about the death and he also gave the jobcentre my nans post office account card, the jobcentre cut it up and my grandad left, then nothing happened so he thought everything was sorted out. then a letter came from the dwp in dec, saying that there was a overpayment of £124 from 27/08 to 9/09 and he had to pay it back, so i took over and started looking into the problem, i found out that the post off acount was maybe still open, so i went and closed the account, a few days later i got the money out the acount which was £1999 and i also had a satement that showed the dwp had kept paying into the acount for the prev 13weeks, i dont understand wats going only, why only ask for £124 when they have paid over £1000 since, can anyone help, ps a friend said just pay them what they asked for and the rest is there mistake. thnx

I'm only 26 so I've only used paper returns since my returns were so easy the first 8 years of filing. However, since getting married and buying a house, I've had to use software to help with my return and have never had anyone else do my taxes. Has anyone switched from one to the other and noticed a significant change in how well the taxes were done? I'm curious if an accountant would find more deductions (or less) than my software. Thanks.

My house is in preforeclosure. We have it for sale but with the holidays it's been slow. We received a notice from the courts & my husband picked up a form that we are to fill out & I guess return to the courts to request a court date. Our realtor recommended we do this to let the judge know we are trying to sell the house. Said it shows our efforts. He said some people don't go cause they don't feel it's worth it. We're wondering if it matters either way, it won't affect the outcome. We'll still be foreclosed on if it doesn't sell. Problem is the notice was dated 12/6. We got it 12/12 & husband wasn't able to pick up form till yesterday. We have until 1/6 to return this form, if that's what we're suppose to do. There is no explanation. What would you do? Does it make a difference either way if we go or not? And what happens if it doesn't sell? When would we request deed in lieu? And should we hire a lawyer now or wait? If wait, when? It's all so confusing.

We underpaid last year by about $500 to the IRS. This year we upped the withholding but will still probably fall about $150 short and have to pay that in. I thought we upped it enough but we unexpectedly made 20% more than last year. Will the IRS charge us for underpaying two years in a row?

My husband and I are in over our heads and we have a baby on the way. We are barely making minimum payments now and we have called to lower interest rates etc. and they are pretty low. My husband just got a new job but it won't be as high paying as the previous one. I also work full time. We don't want to file bankruptcy but we do want to try and get out of debt. Is there help for us out there? We can't pay more than 300 or so a month... we're willing to get rid of credit cards.. what can we do???

I have a project in which I am trying to promote the open university and get people to return to education.
I had lots of ideas and my tutor has advised me to focus on an idea I have using fish. I have to do 3 posters and one poster was the idea of having a fish in a small fish bowl with the headline FEELIING TRAPPED? Some people feel trapped in jobs they hate and need a way to escape so I feel this fits in nicely. The posters all need to link so keeping on the fish theme is what I am trying to do. I have a few other little ideas like, showing an octapus with the heading WANTING MORE FLEXIBILITY? Or one fish looking at lots of other fish with the heading WANT TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS? Or a couple of fish looking at eachother with bubbles blowing out of the mouths with the heading WANT TO LEARN NE LANGUAGES? I am trying to focus on the benefits of the Open university but am finding it tough to link them to fish. Anyone have any good ideas would be super :) Thanks in advance

My daughter's lease expired 4 mos. ago and she is now on a "month-2-month" basis. She did not renew her lease because she knew she wanted to move after she was hit with a huge rent increase. She has found new diggs and can move in 15 days. Will she be forfeiting her ($500) deposit for not giving 30 days notice?
