A few facts before you answer:

Average annual cost to the NHS on smoking related diseases in the UK is £1.7 billion

Average annual government income from tax on tobacco in the UK is £10.5 billion.

The high tax apparently has 2 purposes, to encourage lower usage and to keep taxes lower for those who can't afford it.....Isn't this self defeating, if the government achieve objective 1, objective 2 falls on it's face!

'm up for this job, and normally I only put my professional fundraising work. Well in 2004, I got fired from an administrative assistant job and they ran a complete background check on me and found out. Well, they want to contact my former supervisor. Problem is he hates me. I was actually fired with no just cause and because I was friends with someone who he was getting ready to fire. Long story short. Can this guy tell my potential employer anything? And what do I do? Just refer them to the HR department? And what can they tell him?

I'm in California and just put an offer in on a home. My agent is coming over tonight to discuss the sellers counteroffer, which apparently contains a revision to the loan contingency. We went with the standard/default term of 17 days--they want it shortened to 3 days. Does this mean that if we don't obtain and get approved for financing within 3 days we will lose our earnest money? What if we obtain financing, however aren't happy with it? Can we cancel the deal at that point? Any legitimate help would be appreciated--we're first time home buyers and don't want to lose our hard earned $5000, just because the bank takes longer to process the paperwork than necessary, or there is some unforseen delay. Thanks.

Please settle a dispute. My friend has a business and he leased a car this last year that has a payment he can bearly afford. He thinks that come tax time he can write his lease off and that the state will cut him a check for 100% of what he paid on his lease. He thinks he is getting a free car. Isn't it true that when you write something off you just don't have to pay the tax on that item? Others have told me the same thing that they know someone who wrote off a car and that the check came in the mail for every penny they spent on it. They keep telling me that I should write off as much as I can because it equates to free stuff. So who is right? Thanks, I appriciate it.

I just moved into my new apartment 2 weeks ago, & the manager still never fixed the stove, & I've bben having to either microwave my food or eat out. & also the toilet is broken & I have to flush it 5 times in order for the waste to go down. & the front door gets stuck every time I open & close it.

Should my rent get prorated even more for this? Well, it's already prorated (not for the mistakes but for me coming in @ the middle of the month) & as far as the stove goes, can I @ least bake in the oven if the screws on the stove are not fixed tight?

I submitted an application with a civil service agency for a job today. The necessary education and experience was described as follows: "Bachelor of sicience degree from accredited four-year college in related field. Two years of progressive responsibility. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job."
Ok, I don't have a Bachelors Degree, but something compareble to an associats degree (from Europe) and I read the above description as a possible suggestion that other combinations of educaton and experience would be considered.
Well, the civil service secretary that took my application was down right rude. She insisted that she made it very clear that a Degree was required (it didn't say required!). As I was leaving she said, well, I guess thats what happens if english is your second language. SHOCK! I was speachless and left.

Excluding immegrants, those that do not work and the self employed, the rest of us work hard for our money.(No slight on self employed, but you will see where I am coming from)

We earn money and pay tax on it.
We put it into savings, and pay tax on it.
We withdraw it and spend it, we pay tax on it.
We use it ,throw away the rubbish, and pay tax on that as well.

Has anyone ever worked out how much our money is actually taxed and what we ever get back for it?

Private industry (fed-ex, etc) took over the mail industry 40 years ago and the nation does not NEED a US Post office but, the US "does need" many other things like health care or a US television network to eliminate the need to take lobbyist money and feed the corruption for those running for office. Whatcha think?

I did contract work for under someone for under $1000. He has already paid part of the sum, but he's asking for my social security number before he pays the remaining money. I was under the impression I only have to provide my social security number if he's my employer. I am very hesitant about giving him this information, especially because it's only contract work.
