I just went outside at 1 AM to see what ISO 6400 was like. I took a shot of the moon - hand held - and then turned to take a picture of my car, which I could barely make out in the viewfinder. No, it's not ready for prime time, but I have no idea how the camera got ANY image in the dark. Neither image is down-rezzed - merely cropped for your convenience. View at "Original" to evaluate.

I also did a 100/200 comparo for Antoni in this group. It was just hand-held using auto everything, because I'm freaking tired!

I just thought of this, but I got into photography because...well I just thought it would be cool. Before I got my first SLR, I mostly would sketch, paint and what not. Now, I carry my camera where every I go. It gets kind of bulky, though. Oh, well.

This is from the D300 at ISO 6400. It is cropped, but otherwise untouched in any way.

Without a flash...

If the iso is too high, the photo will be grainy.

Any suggestions?

We recently had a portrait done of my siblings, spouses and children for our parents. The resulting portrait- on canvas and print- came out with my daughter's eyes half closed and me with a horrendous double chin-which I've never ever had in a portrait, it's not a natural feature. My sister is saying that's not the photographer's responsibility, and I am saying it sure as heck is, otherwise I'd go to Sears. Who's correct here? I mean, isn't it their responsibility to make sure they have a good capture? She barely took but maybe 3 pictures, with all of us looking down at her- which i believe may be the culpret- but still, we had 2 proofs to choose from, both practically identical. If it isn't their responsibility, then possibly is this what deciphers the good from the great photographers out there? Because her other work is good, though I didn't see more than a family of 4 in her work, but mine was awful. Print quality was superior, but what good is a superior print of an awful pic?

I have been editing a few of my pictures and was wondering what other people thought of them.

This one was scanned, so it is not as focused as it was on the actual print:

And finally:

I have been working on this one for a while.

Thanks!

I seem to be very interested in photography. Yet I can't take a picture to save my life. I always go on Flickr and look at some great phototagrephers' pictures. I stay on Flickr for hours sometimes. This is probably the best picture I've ever taken (Pathetic, I know!) http://www.flickr.com/photos/23156252@N00/1692220043/

I'd really love to get better at photography and maybe make it a hobby of mine. Do you think I have a chance of getting beter? lol. I just don't know where and how to start and what camera to start with. I have a regular digital camera now, a Kodak easyshare C613, and I'm guessing I can't start with it, right? What would you recommend me to buy as a beginner? Any other tips are appreciated :)

Thanks in advance!

I took a photo of some detail in the sand, taken in daylight with my EOS 300D .
Then I tried to create an effect of simultated moonlight (with a twist), I'm happy with most of it, but I don't like the shell in the upper central left, it looks blown out. I'm after opinions on mending it. Otherwise I will just paste that particular shell over again and redo it.

Here is the original: http://www.flickr.com/photos/16949082@N07/2142000067/

Here is the changed version:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/16949082@N07/2142000739/in/photostream/

I know the original is better, but it's about trying to achieve a desired effect. I'd appreciate any ideas you have. Thank you.

I am really interested in photography,
and am wanting an upgrade on my camera.
I currently have the Kodak P850.
My budget is Under $250.
I want a really nice camera that I could get for that price.
I just bought the Canon S3 IS for under that amount.
Was this a mistake? Is there a better camera I could get for that price?

I look completely different in photos than in real life, different for the worse. My nose always appears longer and my face looks flatter.

Why do some people look different in a photograph?

I've seen these types of pictures here and there, but now I've begun to wonder if there's a name for them so I can search for them on the web. I've seen some where the subjects are so small that you have to guess what the object actually is. Usually they take up the entire picture and sometimes the entire object isn't even shown. I'm just wondering, is there a name for this type of photography?
