I used an article in the Jan. 2008 issue of pop photo titled "4 ways to save a face." The 1st time I used it, it worked great, but now I am having problems with the 1st part of the article titled "All-Over skin Smoothing." Instead of bluring the skin and smoothing the skin, it makes black streaks. This only happens on some of the pictures, or it works only on certain people in the images. These are the directions the magazine gives: 1)Duplicate your background layer by going to Layler>Duplicate Layer. Name it Blur. 2)Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Set the radius to 50, and click ok. 3)Add a black layer mask to the Blur layer. Holding down the Alt key(Option on a Mac), click the Layer Mask button. 4)Hit B for the brush tool. In the options bar, pick a medium-sized brush, and slide the brush's opacity down to 30%. Be sure that white is set as your foreground color and paint your subject's skin until it looks smooth and glowing. Any advise on what I am doing wrong?

I am getting either a ricoh R7 or canon powershot A720

BOTH cameras have the option of manual white balance override, and manual focus, but the Canon also has "manual mode" e.g. -
• Auto
• Program AE
• Shutter Priority AE
• Aperture Priority AE
• Manual
• Custom
• Portrait
• Landscape
• Night Snapshot
• Kids & Pets
• Stitch Assist
• Movie
• Special Scene

the Ricoh has:
Still
• Continuous
• S-Continuous
• M-Continuous
• Scene Modes
• Portrait
• Face
• Sports
• Landscape
• Nightscape
• High Sensitivity
• Zoom Macro
• B&W
• Sepia
• Skew correction
• Text
• Movie
• My Setting 1+2

Do you think this means the Ricoh has less manual control? I can't work this out.

The settings were f/3.2, 1/3 (I think), and ISO 200 on my cheap rip-off-of-an-SLR Kodak Z650.

Would you add more contrast? Any tips for dealing with glossy surfaces (the board in this case which is glazed clay), and opaque glass?

My camera has a setting (and i don't want to change it) that allows it to place the date the picture was taken on in the bottom right-hand corner. for some photos (like christmas) its really nice, but others its just an annoying distraction. How do i get rid of it on that specific picture without using photoshop. If its impossible, thats fine, but i still want to know about it.
Details people, details.

I'm somewhat of a newbie to cameras, but not as much as some. I have several point and shoot cameras, no digital slr's.

what brand, make or model do you suggest to purchase, and why? I'm looking in the maximum of $700 before tax range.

I was somewhat interested in the nikon d40x and the canon rebel xti (or something like that).

What are your thoughts?

i have a Holga 120CFN and i want to buy this fish eye lens:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart_accessories&A=details&Q=&sku=494644&is=REG

but it says that the lens shouldnt be used with my specific camera because it might vignette the flash. this means that i'll get the black around the edge of my picture, right? well if this is the look that i want then it wouldnt be a problem if i use the lens with my camera, correct?

thanks in advance :)

What do You think the main advantages are of SLR cameras, that are impossible to do with average good quality digital cameras
I am thinking of getting this camera for nature photography:

it has the option of full manual control. Do you think it would be any good?

Hello,

I currently have about a $700 budget at the current moment, and noticed that futureship has a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT 8MP SLR Digital Camera With 18-55mm USM Kit for sale on boxing day, $400... is this a good deal?

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10097983&catid=22553&logon=&langid=EN

Or should I just save my cash, and keep saving... and maybe order something off of ebay, like a Nikon 40D kit... for around $700 plus shipping

New to photography, so unsure on what is a better camera, and if the rebel XT is something I should go with...

I have a canon powershot a630, when I turn the flash on the picture turns out very dark. When I turn it off, the picture is bright but blurry. The movie recorder works perfectly (without a flash). The flash still lights up, but what is going on here? I'm not a photographer so I have no clue. I am using the camera on auto setting.

I would like to go into photography when I get older (Im 16 right now) and was thinking of taking some college classes for it.
I take mostly nature photography right now but would like to expand to portraits like doing weddings and things like that eventually. Anyway, do you think Im on the right track and am doing well enough that I could be a successful photographer someday? This is my site:

I know she has a great personality, but I wonder if you think she's pretty?

The REAL reason for this question is to show a totally unaltered image from my D300. I didn't read anything, but stuck my spare battery and a CF card in the camera and Jess rolled over and meowed at me. I didn't realize that the camera was set to allow a shutter speed as low as 1/2 second, even with the flash. My bad. I wasn't ready for this and probably moved. Anyhow...

View this in the original size and see what you think for sharpness. Isn't she pretty?

I'm talking about the D300 - not the cat!

Cropped to 1834x1985 from 4288x2848 image, but otherwise unaltered. (3.6 MP of the original 12.2 MP image)

Just wondering if anyone would happen to now if street photography is legal in Boston, or the surrounding town? Or if it goes by state..if its legal in Massachusetts?
Case, your not sure, street photography is basically taking candid photos of strangers sometimes with their knowledge, sometimes without.
