I am new to this stuff. I really would like to take my own photographs but I dont know where to begin. Like what camera should I buy, whats macro, and iso ? I dont know much of anything but I would really like to learn. Does anyone know of any good books I could read. I know there are classes I can take but I don't want to spend money on classes or anything. I just want a book to learn some good stuff. Any suggestions at all would be appreciated !

Thanks & Happy Holidays

If there are any photography classes available in your area you should enroll immediately. Formal instruction is the best way to learn. Once you understand composition and f-stops and shutter speeds and light and ISO you'll be better prepared to select a camera.

These books (reviewed in the Dec. 2007 issue of Shutterbug Magazine, shutterbug.com) can also help you.

"Hands-On Digital Photography" by George Schaub

"How Digital Photography Works, Second Edition" by Ron White

I'm a beginner too!
Macro is like when you take pictures of small things and thing up close...Like this:

Iso is like a measurement of How sensetive a cameras sensor is to incoming lite. For a really bright photographers might set their cameras iso at like 50 or 100 to correctly expose teh image. For dark and low light stuff they might have it at like 800 to get enough light. But using higher iso makes the camera really sensitive to interference from electronic sources and light.Which creates "noise" and makes your pictures suck..like this: http://docs.gimp.org/images/filters/examples/noise-taj-scatter-rgb.jpg

I got interested buy reading pop photo magazines and stuff. I guess you could go to bookamillion or somewhere and look at photography books. They usually have a section at the beginning that help you select the right camera for your skill level and what you need. I just recently brought a 275 dollar point and shoot with lots of manual controls that help you learn about setting up photos and how things like iso and macro affect your images. You seem really interested and inquisitive.Good Luck!!!

you need to take class at your local college....then you can invest in what you want. there are tons of photography websites and books you can get to read more about it and learn. Don't spend craploads on equipment until you know what you need/are comfortable with. Go to the book store and read in the photography department and get some books.
happy holidays!

It may seem antiquated in this digital world, but Ansel Adams has a pretty good series of books....The Camera, The Negative, and The Print.

I can really recommend this book as an excellent source for a beginner: "Get the Most from Your Digital Camera," by Simon Joinson.

I am sure that it is not "everything" Simon knows about photography, but it is sure to help you get started.
