If you go Nikon, steer clear of the D40, as the body has no built in AF motor, severely limiting your lens selection. If your going Nikon, get the D50.
Cannon makes great equipment too, and I know many who have walked down Cannon avenue, and are pleased with the image quality ect.
If you can afford the Leica, buy the Nikon D300 and get a real camera...
I have never been a fan of the olympus line, although again you don't stay in the camera biz long if you make junk, and Olympus has been around for a very long time....

IMO you'd be fine with any of the ones you listed. However, I suggest taking a look at the Pentax K100D Super and K10D and the Sony A100 and A700.
The K100D Super is 6.1mp, has dust removal for the sensor, has Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body and accepts every K-mount lens made since 1975. The older lenses will me manual focus but will have the benefit of IS. This camera uses 4 AA batteries so rechargeable ones would be advisable.
The K10D is 10mp, has dust removal for the sensor, has IS and is well-sealed against dust and moisture (no, it isn't waterproof), accepts the same lenses and uses Lithium-Ion D-L150 rechargeable batteries.
The A100 is 10mp, has dust removal for the sensor and Super Anti-Shake in the camera body. It accepts every Minolta Maxxum A-mount AF lens made since 1985 and many of the Maxxum accessories (the Sony website should tell you which ones). Its powered by NP-FM55H Lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries.
The A700 is 12mp, has the same features as the A100 and several upgrades which you can compare side by side at dpreview.com. It uses the NP-FM500H Lithium-Ion batteries.
IMO all 4 of these cameras offer more features and benefits at comparable prices versus their worthy competitors.

For what?
D50 supports more lenses.
D40 has a bigger sensor.
D-Lux has the pinnacle of glass.
XTi makes you a member of a very professional club.
--- I personally recommend the RZ67, EOS-1 Mark III ds, Nikon F4, Canon XTi, and Nikon D50...in that order.
