Theater & Acting - February 2007

I like to think of the time that someone on here said that their favourite song from the opera Carmen was 'Have you got a light, boy?' It suggests that we artistes should not be too precious or pompous when defending culture. There is room for evrybody. I smile and heed his warning.

Because I criticized a play, my wife said, "If you think you can do better, write one yourself."
I am now going to try and since I've been told that "one should not begin to write a play until one has an ending in mind," I am looking for an ending.

I would like an ending that would make the audience leave the theater thinking seriously about the affect on the Leading Man or Woman.

What do you suggest?

Okay. It's time for me to attend an audition for the Drama program I've applied for at College. I'm told that I'll be there for approximately 3 - 4 hours. What?!
3 - 4 hours?! Why do I have to be there that long? Is it because I have to sit through everyone's audition? If that's the case, there's going to be a ton of people there because we only have to perform two, three minute monolgues.
Why does it take 3-4 hours to audition for a drama program? What happens at these auditions? Are there interviews too? What's more, do you recommend just standing there and delivering the monolgues (is that the norm?) or should I perform it (move around the stage, use facial expressions, etc) This is my first audition I'm pretty nervous. It's not until mid-March, but still. Thanks all!

Tonight is opening night for the big break of my life. There's no singing, but I have to speak loudly and project my voice. Is there a secret concoction that stage actors may drink to help their vocal chords?

Why is Sam Shepard always chewing when he is acting? 24 years ago in The Right Stuff he is chewing his way thru a movie. And, he does the same in Blackhawk Down. Did he study gum-chewing in his method-acting classes?

Just something I'd like to do on the side....anyone have any experience with stand-up? I've been interested for long time, but the one worry I have is that my humor is very dark and dry and I think it'd be hard to find a good group for that to appeal to.

Okay.

I really want to be an actress or movie director. This year, our musical is Annie, and I would really love to be Annie and would put in all my effort just to make that part.

I'm not sure how good I sing- I know how to sing with a higher pitched voice like Annie, and I have the "Maybe" song stuck in my head.

Does anyone have tips on how to have a great audition and/or improve on my singing?

Any answers would help! Thanks!

I am going to audition for the musical "Oklahoma!" in about 10 days. I want the role of Ado Annie, but we have nothing to go on. They said just to show up and they would provide all of the materials I will need. Can anyone give me any tips? Anyone who has ever been Ado Annie or in "Oklahoma!" in general I would love to hear your experiences. Thank you.

It's like the six degrees of kevin bacon, except you just pick to random actors' names and try to link them through films or shows that they've done. The links don't have to have a scene together, they just have to be credited as actors in the same film. (Ex: ann was in movie x with mark, mark was in movie y with joe, so forth) They have to be linked in under six films. Whoever does it in the least amount wins. And the two actors you start with can't have appeared in a movie together.
