Just something I'd like to do on the side....anyone have any experience with stand-up? I've been interested for long time, but the one worry I have is that my humor is very dark and dry and I think it'd be hard to find a good group for that to appeal to.

In theory it's easy to get into stand-up. You find your local comedy club(s), audition, and go on. If you're good and attract an audience, you get an agent, who books you as part of a tour. If the tour goes really, really, really well, HBO comes knocking and offers to put you on film.

As you observe, though, you've got to find your niche. That can be a challenge. Ideally you want to go to that final stage, where you have an audience full of people who know they like your kind of humor. But you have to go through the other steps first.

That's actually OK. At most clubs you get five minutes or so to fill. Audiences know that if you're dying up there, they'll be rid of you in a couple of minutes. They like the fact that they'll see a eight to 12 comedians over the course of an evening. They enjoy the variety.

Some towns do better at comedy than others. New York City has a lot of comedy clubs, including some "bringer" clubs where you're expected to bring your own audience. That's how you get the experience to get into bigger clubs. You've got to pay your dues, as it were. You're supposed to be watching the others, getting advice, and improving your act. No agent will touch you until you've done a few dozen shows and gotten positive receptions. Often, in fact, you don't come to the agent: they'll come to you.

Best of luck. Dark and dry humor is good; it presents a nice change-up in the middle of an evening.
