I am going to audition for the musical "Oklahoma!" in about 10 days. I want the role of Ado Annie, but we have nothing to go on. They said just to show up and they would provide all of the materials I will need. Can anyone give me any tips? Anyone who has ever been Ado Annie or in "Oklahoma!" in general I would love to hear your experiences. Thank you.

With all due respect what can you possibly mean "Nothing to go on?" Hopefully you've seen the play, a version of the film, some form of it as it's been presented for so many years....Even the sound tracks?

First of all, not even considering the play, dress professionally but not over the top. If they want anyone in a costume they'll provide it.

Unless asked, DO NOT audition with a song from the show, but similar selections. Their focus will be on your stage presence and range anyway. If you get a call back, and it happens to be for a specific part, then you'll be required to sing the show tunes.

Be respectful and humble without seeming desperate, and be prepared if selected to be a chorus member or a walk on bit player. Within that context DO NOT take a rejection as a personal attack.

If they may not have song selections available, YOU better, and know anything you sing as if it was your own name spelled backward.

More important than anything else however is RELAX, enjoy, and try to have fun in this. It's a fun show.

Oklahoma! is a landmark in the history of American musical theatre. It's one of the first "book musicals" and was first performed on Broadway back in 1936. Ado Annie is in love with Will Parker. Both characters are considered as "comic relief" to Laurie and Curly who are the "romantic leads." Laurie has to have a trained (or "legit") voice while Annie's singing voice can be more of a "belt" style. Hopefully you live near a good library that carries DVD or videos because you can check out the film version with Shirley Jones as Laurie. They stayed pretty close to the original script in that film version so the dialog and songs of Ado Annie will give you a good idea as to how the character could be played. Break a leg at your audition!

Chances are they will want you to sing Ado Annie's song, "I Cain't Say No." Learn it.

Google and you will find a lot on the play. If you cannot do this, don't bother trying out. If you don't understand the character or even know anything about her, you're sunk like the rest of the wannabes here.
