The poem "grandfather says" by Ai

http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMI...

-Discuss the relationship between the Visual, Auditory, and Thematic elements.

- the poet uses visual elements of the text, such as enjambment, stanzas or verse-paragraphs, formal lines or informal ones, etc. Why? How does that relate to the experience of reading the poem.

- the poet uses meter and rhyme to establish a varied cadence and pattern of sound. What sort of emphases or direction does that create?

- the themes, images, metaphors, and conceits (extended metaphors) conjure ideas, emotions, and concepts. To what end? And how has the poet used the visual and auditory elements to build on the thematic ones?

Christmas morning’s magic
Ribbons and bows with socks full of toys
Bring the joys of wishes come true
To many anxious girls and boys

Mountains of ripped apart paper
And bountiful times hide the family flaws
Then the last little box brings a smile
To the woman whose plays Mrs. Claus

As I lean back in my comfortable chair
I’ll wear my new tie and try on the gloves
Laugh and sing to the angel with wings
On a tree decorated with love

Silent tears fall like rain
Trying to cover up the pain
His effort all in vain
People starting to see his pain
He hides his face in shame
Abolished in the rain

I don't know when I wrote this but is it Good, Bad, somewhere in the middle?

Sikhism...
On the list, major religion number five;
Sanskrit teachings keeping thought alive!
I read your texts, and my mind just thrives!
Meditational aesthetics, I call my practice...
I'm multi-religious and I truly act it.
Who can call it odd;
calling the Universe
"God"?
I like the expression of unique experiences
and the fact of the lack of adherences.

Hinduism...
I love you and the respect for Karma.
I've learnt a bit about Sanatana Dharma.
You know that one god, can be many things
I recognize what your Mahabharata brings.
Instances of brilliance, thoughtfulness' resilience.
Yoga and meditation of the physical form,
remove shadows that come with storms.
Finding bad words for your thoughts, is harder...
Intelligent thought in the scriptures of Samsara.
I enjoy you indeed...wait, lose my "me"?, I peep...
Excuse me but I count them, I don't join sheep.

Let mind and body settle the score;

I feel so lonely,
As a leave floating
This leave going up and down
In the wind sometimes a little up,
when u smile to me
Sometimes really down!

As all the words are poor, and small to say
What my heart feels for you!
Which the words that reach the mountain,
the light, the melody that I see in you?

How many words are necessary to say I miss
when they cannot have you here!
How humble these words are ,
That in this indifferent paper,
Are the pale expression of the thoughts!

What curse invoked upon me
What damage I have done
What anger swells and divides
me from her?
This world, this horrid peace
without her voice
This desolate existence
with only the reminder
of her Mona Lisa smile
Haunted
Cursed
Wishing for joy and laughter
Hoping my curiosity
hasn't broken the seal
on some forbidden
or half-hidden
treasure
for pleasure
I searched
and found
her unspoken beauty
her delicate balance
transposed
against my carnivorous hedonism
my impetuous nature
to discover
uncover
her secret
And just as her beauty
lit my eyes ablaze
the curse unleashed
imprisoning me
beyond hope
in the fire
of my dark desire

I freely received life
......so I freely give
Great motto by which to live
I bless the teachings of Jesus
Forgive me if skeptical of him as a man.
Forgive me if I laugh in your face;
if you say that in his plan is race.
Oh no! What's your dysfunction?
Meant for nobody specifically,
but meant for all to just think...

Storm

Gold lining, no silver...
Sun-flooded glows...
Grey clouds soften...
One rooster crowing.

Hawk perches early.
No movement.
No shadow.
Much food.

Vapors rise from
The Delphic floor.
I will not robe
Today. Nor speak.

I will listen...
Bemused.

Away the Night
away the rain
awake the Sun
awake my pain

Remember her in my dreams
and in every days' moments
One perfect glimpse--and now
glaringly, achingly, my passsion foments

Toward what end--what cliff
my desire aims to fall
I care not: freed from chains
of reality my heart shreds all

Time, thou evil separator, Go!
My Darling kept by your endless pulse
in a prison I cannot enter
thou infinite minutes (without her) doth I repulse

Sweetest, break the hold of fear
and enter me with doubt cast aside
My arms await patiently, emptily
while time (fear) ticks (grips), my passion's denied

Where is she tonight?
Away! cold, lonesome Rain
Awake! bright, cheering Sun
Await, heart, the end of pain.
Await, time, the end of your reign.
await.... await.... I weaken--
await.... await.... my endless refrain.

Should I paint my belly yellow,
and disguise what I do know?
What do you people want? Who knows?
So, if you want them I supply new flows.
New style... say I'm not peaceful while I smile.
Even speach with Ignorance can be free.
I support that you're speaking.
But, people seem misguided with me.
The way I handle words, poetically...
they call it simple, forgettably.
If you have a mind, wake it up.
If you have a hobby, take it up.
My hobbies are many
You want me tortured?
On a jet like Benny?
Or to fall off my game like Penny?
I know the word-hustle.
I've known some strong mental muscles.
I know how to tussle, but don't do it.
I know I could probably have you touched for free.
But, no matter how much you hate my love grows.
If you don't....somone/something up above knows.

If you say you're a Patriot, Act like one.
Questioning mine is an untruthful one.
An untruthful pursuit.
I'm related to George Washington, damnit!
I drink coffee like I'm a coffee bean bandit!
Is that not your cup of tea?
Is that why you f--- with me?

Truth is my truest mental addiction.
Truth is truly my affliction.
Do you dislike me;
because I bless the Sun like Egyptians?
The Sun...which one?
I shoot with words; you need a gun.
I write with heart and do it for fun.

I try to stay right and righteous.
News speaking nothing but hate; it incites it.
It invites it.
I seek to create peace and unity.
I seek to provide words, usefully.
They seek my stopping, usually.

I love my country's people, and yours.
Systems remove equals, creates whores.
Industrialism and business philosophies.
What can I say.....it's Ignorance obviously.

At the end of the road
When I look back and gloat,
I see that nobody's beside me
And the world is looking funny.
At the top of the hill
I feel an insecure chill,
I know I hurt my old relations
Maddened with my cruel obsessions.

Now I feel an ecstasy!
My fantasy to conquer destiny:
It might be thrilling me
But its really killing me;
And even if I know it all
I cant stop my thirsty soul,
From truly making a hole
In my heart’s innocent wall.

Its not complete, but I’m still working on it. I'll be submitting the finished product on 23rd December, or maybe on Christmas Day.

looking for helpful criticism on this short poem, thank you.

3 am

its 3 am and I'm still here
I've got to find a way out somehow
but its taking for ever
thought I'd be gone by now

I see things in the shadows
hear things in the air
but when I try to reach out
theres nobody there

nobody to guide me
or wait by my side
but I hear a voice in the silence
that wont let me subside

thought I'd be gone by now
but the end's nowhere near
sometimes an hour can seem like a lifetime
its 3 am and I'm still here

its late. i had to make up another one. not as good as the first one......tell me what you think:
The time is moving slow and
I am waiting for something new
Each minute feels like an hour
And I don’t know what to do
I wait for a new fantasy to conquer
As the Sandman seems to be coming early
To sprinkle his golden sands over my eyes
The clock stops and
Slowly
Slowly
Slowly
I drift off,
Close my eyes
And start to dream in Technicolor

"Illegal Spying"

HEY KIDS!
Have you heard of illegal spying?
Did you say no?... you must be lying!
They want to see you laughing, crying...
If you speak certain ways of certain things
they'll probably want you to feel like dying.
and so-called Patriots Act this way?
Don't want me to ask "why?", about Iraq...
when every day we hear them counting bags
bags of bodies...human beings
don't act like I'm the only one seeing
don't act like I'm the only one freeing
freeing from chains
seeing with brains
we see insanity
powerful figures in vanity
don't get me wrong, some are o.k.
but things aren't!
Losing freedoms men and women die for
these are the things I cry for

"What Type Of Man Are You?"

You say you're a man and all,
you stand with your hands on balls.
Stay out late, never answer when your girl calls.
What type of man are you?

While I'm asking the question;
make you want to grab weapons?
What type of man are you?
Asking guns to do;
What your hands can do?
Pull it on me, shoot me, I'll die;
peace sign on my hands for you.
Do you get mad if I stand to you?
What type of man are you?

Are you the type of man,
if your woman talks loud you raise your hand?
Is that you? Do you call yourself a man?
Do you talk all day, call your woman a *****?
Gossiping fools need to look in the mirror.
A man? Is that what you're seeing?
What type of man are you being?
Are you worthy of the title?
The answer to that is vital.
Are you the type of man,
that looks at Truth and sees a rival?
If laying hands on a woman
is a man that's you...
you deserve a real man laying hands on you.
That's what 2pac meant calling men bitches.

poetry is like a butterfly
poetry when loses its wilderness becomes an ornament with trophy status.
when the mystery is crushed out of a poem when its wings are pinned forever , when it no longer makes weird noises in the night, when it has grown harmless in the collectionbook of the school text, the poem will have attained the state of perfect meaning which is death. many people treat poetry like this these days whats your opinion?

Anima Mea

I have something for you
A gift I'd like to give
It may not seem like all that much
Yet, it's priceless to me
You can't carry it in your pocket
Nor can it be worn like jewellery
Still, it will always be with you
At least I hope that it will
It's insubstantial, like a wisp of vapor
But it's substance could fill volumes
It's a part of my being
Yet difficult to locate
And I want to give it to you
Although, it's not really mine to give
You claimed it a long time ago
Even if you didn't realize it
It became yours ages ago
And I barely even noticed
Not that it mattered
Not that I minded
All that matters is that it's yours
And me along with it

as i watch my cat
on his little tree

how nice it would be

not a care in the world
just sitting and listening
to the sound of his purr
Wouldn't it be nice
to be a cat?
wouldn't it be nice
to be like that?

The poem "grandfather says" by Ai

http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/16453

348. To Althea, from Prison

WHEN Love with unconfinèd wings
Hovers within my gates,
And my divine Althea brings
To whisper at the grates;
When I lie tangled in her hair 5
And fetter'd to her eye,
The birds that wanton in the air
Know no such liberty.

When flowing cups run swiftly round
With no allaying Thames, 10
Our careless heads with roses bound,
Our hearts with loyal flames;
When thirsty grief in wine we steep,
When healths and draughts go free—
Fishes that tipple in the deep 15
Know no such liberty.

When, like committed linnets, I
With shriller throat shall sing
The sweetness, mercy, majesty,
And glories of my King; 20
When I shall voice aloud how good
He is, how great should be,
Enlargèd winds, that curl the flood,
Know no such liberty.

Stone walls do not a prison make, 25
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love
And in my soul am free, 30
Angels alone, that soar above,
Enjoy such liberty.
