Are you the ultimate judge of what is good and evil or do you believe there is an outside set of standards that you base your views on?
What is supreme good, and supreme evil within yourself?

Surely the belief in an objective truth requires the same blind faith as it does to believe in God?

Scientific theories change all the time and often drastically: e.g. Thinking the world was flat, or that the Earth was at the centre of the solar system. At the time these were solid facts and wern't generally questioned. How do we know what we believe now is true? and how do we know that there is even an objective truth?

So that one day everything that could possibly be discovered is discovered, so that there was an infinite knowledge of the Universe including how it was created and its future.

(assuming we dont die, there was infinite time and money and cooperation etc etc)

Argument: A dog is not ethical because the dog only knows what gets rewarded with a treat and thus concludes to do the desired action.

Counterargument: According to an article in the earliest level of "moral" development the child defines right and wrong in terms of what authority figures say is right or wrong or in terms of what results in rewards and punishments. What makes this any different from what a dog does? Therefore a dog is moral according to this synopsis.
in other words what makes
"Sit"
"Fetch"
any different from
"Don't kill people"
"Don't steal things"

Our ethical systems may be more complex and higher evovled but the basic psychological principals are still there.
How are these any different?

Please I don't want any religious based answers. I don't care for any religion based analysis.

Only scientifically based speculations or other opinions based on rational analysis and whatever little scientific information we do have about the topic.

separate section specifically for that? I mean all are welcome to ask whatever they want but what's going on here? Is it that people really don't know the difference, or are they tired of preaching to the converted, or is it something else?

Love's Philosophy

The fountains mingle with the river
And the rivers with the Ocean,
The winds of Heaven mix for ever
With a sweet emotion;
Nothing in the world is single;
All things by a law divine
in one spirit meet and mingle.
Why not I with thine?--

See the mountains kiss high Heaven
And the waves clasp one another;
No sister-flower would be forgiven
If it disdained its brother;
And the sunlight clasps the earth
And the moonbeams kiss the sea:
What is all this sweet work worth
If thou kiss not me?

It can be a lonely time, even when people are all around you, so what do YOU wish for. Be 'selfish'. Not a bad thing to be every so often. We ALL want World Peace, so take it as read, well, if we have half a mind we want the world to be full of smiles! BUT YOU???

WHAT DO YOU WISH FOR???

Happy Christmas/Bah Humbug (delete as applicable!!)

Have Fun and Keep Smiling.

my pevious post got a lot of controversy so ive gone back to my notes

the idea of the "pro-life" side of the coin is that the fetus is alive

what is alive

at 8 weeks the heart beats (true) but heart cells beat by themselves outside of the body in a petri dish

the fetus at 12 weeks i belive starts to move its developing muscles slightly, again even the muscles of a corpse will move with stimulation from an electrode

cogognition? well base emotions such as fear and joy only appear after the child is born (usually in first day) and just because the developing brain shows brainwaves this shouldnt be confused with thought, to determine whether a brain is active and thinking we would need pet cat and emt scans

what im driving at is at is that a lot of the actions performed by the fetus are just biological quirks that dont recquire the presence of a functioning mind or incorporeal soul

what is life

answer that then we debate the ethics of taking it away

Im all for it. I think we as humans should never cease, but id like to hear from other peoples opinions on the matter. Should there be more spending on it or less?
I mean should we spend more?isn't it immoral to spend it doing that than using it for a more immediate need like, medical research or getting food to the poor?

This is basically and open philosophical/moral Q to you all......

Alot of people talk about how the electronic age and computers are destroying the fabric of socialization. Kids don't play outside because they're playing video games. People don't talk, they 'e-mail' and 'blog'. Even advertising is addressing this question as in a recent 'Applebee's' ad campaign.

My personal opinion is that the electronic age has opened up the world to communication between people that would otherwise never have contact with each other. I also feel that too much is being made about the importance of physical interaction simply out of a sense of nostalgia.

What do you think?
