Does it benefit us? I think that we could use this money on things that matter like saving our Earth or Medicare. For crying out loud, the Nintendo company spends more money on research that the United Stated does on Medicare. Finding life somewhere else would be nice, but it isn't worth spending so much money on.

What millions are you refering to?
If you mean the NASA program - you should know that the program isn't about finding creapy aliens from another planet.
Our sun will burn out one day - getting off this planet is a very important mission. Spending millions for the future of humanity is not immoral.
There are already millions being spent on medical research and getting food to the poor - we have to look today, but also to the future.

How can people not want to know what is out there. For nearly 14 billion years, the Universe has been expanding. Is it reasonable to think we are alone? As the father in Contact said, "what a terrible waste of space."
Plus, science for the sake of science almost always pats dividends. Computers moved far ahead because of the space program. Not that any of us use one. I say more spending. I aways have and it makes a lot more sense then that war in Iraq.

Pros and cons, pros and cons...
This has been debated my entire life...
The Civil War, besides being the bloodiest battles ever fought, provided new materials, new methods of fighting (using one's brain to defeat the enemy, rather than sheer numbers...employed by the North at Gettysburg!) and showed people new ways of doing everything in life (the Geneva Convention was a direct result of the South's cruel imprisonment of Union Soldiers at Andersonville).
Similarly, the Space Race has provided new materials, new ways of doing things, new medications...
While many suppose these things could be accomplished WITHOUT WAR, WITHOUT THE SPACE RACE, the fact is IT DID NOT HAPPEN without a great challenge.
Most poor, if all the wealth in the world was divided equally for each and every human, would soon loose their share to some one else.
For all those who are "concerned" about the welfare of mankind, QUIT HAVING SO MANY BABIES! The earth is overpopulated. For those against war, quit having so many babies AND quit killing 40,000 to 50,000 INNOCENT people on the American highways each and every year; stop the slaughter by medical professions.

No. When you consider the amount of problems we have in many countries i.e. 3rd world famine etc and we are spunking billions and billions in finding out if there is life in outer space, with the real possibility that there isnt, then no, it is a total waste of money. Could be far better spent on our own civilisation problems.

no.
if we ever do find living things in outer space what makes us think they will be peaceful? its not like humans are oh so peaceful themselves. its like the old twilight episode where aliens come to our planet, say they are nice, take us to there planet, say its a better place, then eat us. it would be better if we just left them alone because chances are they think we are a little myth just like most humans think they are. lets just forget about it and use are money for something that really matters. ending world hunger, perhaps!?

No. The surest sign that there's intelligent life out there is that it's never tried to contact us. Money should be spent on making the earth a better place.

Yes, yes yes, we should continue exploring the universe.
Will we find life there? Who knows. If we do, fine, then we will find out more about ourselves.
The best reason will be to find another planet that will be as sustainable to the human race as this gorgeous planet of ours.
