so i watched this thing on tv where through a telescope we, on earth, saw a star explode like millions of light years away, therefore we literally watched the past. it made me ask does time even exist? why is it to a dying man 14 seconds can seem like our standards of an "hour" and why to a little girl being at disneyworld half a day can seem like this same "hour"? If we look at a planet two light years away...we in 2007, currently view a planet in its 2005 state ... so basically we all have different perspectives, so does time exist or does it make no sense or is it simple relative?

Why do many advocates of Nietzsche exert themselves so energetically in "explaining away" Nietzsche's negative views of women, democracy and various races?

They argue that his opinion of women wasn't really as low as it may seem, that anything totalitarian perceived in his work is a misinterpretation etc.

But as Nietzscheans don't they realize that pandering to the received wisdom and political prejudices of academia, attempting to render him palatable to the mob, and force his views to conform to the current zeitgeist of political correctness, all for the purpose of "justifying" him, is laughably un-Nietzschean?

So why do they do it?

Hey there,

I have a few idea's of this controversial topic, such as:
-Utopia can exist without liberty and freedom.
-Impossible.
-Brainwash to all think alike, even then minds may wonder.
-Questioning of Existence.
-Lack of knowledge.
-Ignorance is bliss? It isn't even bliss because they don't even know.
-Control + Power aspect. In the end, power corrupts.

I am trying to form a thesis statement for an english essay; comparing Brave New World and The Handmaid's Tale.

If anyone has read these books, even if you haven't, I would love to hear your input!

So I'm having a bit of an argument with a friend of mine. My friend tells me he "doesn't want to do something, because he doesn't want to." I think this is totally ridiculous and not a reason at all, and he thinks this is perfectly good reasoning. What do you think? Can you not want to do something BECAUSE you don't want to do it?
