I think back to the 50's, and I picture it in black and white. The sixties had color in it.
The 50's had McCarthy and commie under every bed. It also had a simple time. Television was on some of the time, not 24-7. I remember in 1956, there was a special on the tube, Peter Pan with Mary Martin in the title role. My dad brought home a couple of bags of carmels and we set around and unwrapped them until the bowl was full. He then melted them and made carmel apples.
We had air raid drills. We were taken to a spot and shown how to cover the back of our necks so that the radiation burns would not get us there.
Kids played outside. No video games, except for Winky Dink. (A cartoon that you drew things on the picture tube, covered by a plastic drawing sheet so winky could have a bridge to cross). We did not get our winky dink set until we drew on the tube without the cover. Mom was just a little upset. We joined a junior bowling league on Saturday mornings.
There were soda fountains at the drug stores. It was just a little simpler....oh, and if you did something wrong, you mom and dad were going to find out about it.

I'm 50 - there are so many differences. We didn't grow up with any remote controls for anything. Technology has changed society. The way we listen to music, communicate, do our jobs are all different.
I think the media has also changed society quite a bit. We didn't have all the tabloid reporting we have now, and every movie and TV show wasn't filled with sexual innuendo's. On the flip side of that, we have a great way to find out whats happening all across the world within minutes of it happening.

The biggest changes are scientific advances and technological advances.
Think about it: Today people who would have otherwise died from diseases such as heart disease and cancer can now life full and productive lives. And 50 years ago, computers were barely more than a dream, cell phones were purest fantasy, and air travel was still in its infancy.

In some sense if was worse and in some sense it was better. The pace was more normal... When people got home, they were away from the "rat race."
These days, people are running all the time. Not good. The pace was the big difference.

Racism and sexism was more open. Minorities still had to keep "their place" in society. Hate was more open. Institutions were and still are in place that kept certain people in their social and sexual class. The exclusive class had not been invaded by the "other" classes, therefore they ignored them. And still the same things that exist today, except they were quieter and hidden.
