I have principles that I do not compromise -even if they are painful! but the chaos around me , in this world we live in , is really very unreliable! Is very few that stand alone , in pain , forgotten , for daring to speak the truth! Is it worth it?

So, it's been said that the first step in gaining knowledge is to know that you don't know. If that's the case, and if it's a good thing to understand that you don't know the answer and then ask the questions to get the answer, why do I consistantly feel stupid? I'm not stupid, I just know that I don't understand and that I want to understand because all knowledge is worth having. Any thoughts?

And by the way ... don't be mean or a jack@ss.

Please, read the whole thing before you respond, and avoid one liners. Links are fine though.

I found this post on a philosophy forum and thought it was an interesting argument. Does anyone have an argument AGAINST it?

1. Despite obvious differences between human and nonhuman animals, we share a capacity to suffer, and this means that they, like us have interests in not suffering. If we ignore or discount their interests simply on the grounds that they are not of the same species, the logic of our position is similar to that of the racist or sexist - he who thinks that to be white or male is to be inherently superior in moral status, irrespective of other qualities and characteristics.

Some humans - infants and those with severe intellectual disabilities - have less ability to reason and less self-awareness than some nonhuman animals. So we cannot justifiably use these criteria to draw a distinction between all humans on the one hand and all nonhuman animals on the other.

With all of the different philosophies being thrown around in the form of cheesy cliche sayings, which one seems to actually work? So, when it comes to matters of the heart, is it better to fight for what you want or leave it to fate?

You might say things like giving to charity, volunteering to build homes, or putting the desires of your friends before your own are selfless.

However, all of these actions stem from your own ideologies. You believe that for some reason or another, whether it is religion, morality, god's will, whatever, you should do the above actions. Consequently, doing these charitable acts gives you a kind of satisfaction that you have done what you believed in. This satisfaction has to outweigh any costs of helping the other people (the $100 donation, 10 hours of time, etc). If this is the case, then you are still putting your desires first; you are just weighing more intangible things (the benefits of doing what you believe in) against the costs of helping other people.

How do you get around this problem?

I was sitting still preparing to make a left turn when a fully loaded semi rear ended my little Corsica sending me into oncoming traffic where I was struck by another semi. Adding to this, I was fresh from leaving my first hubbs after 10 plus years married, and had a antique victorian bed frame running from the trunk to the drivers seat, the rails bent and didn't go through the cheap Corsica bucket seats,,,,,AND I walked away, was a bit sore and got a $5,000 settlement......I just think about it sometimes and know I'm lucky, just wished to get some input on it tonight...............

If you could take what you know now with you and go back to a younger age... What age would you go back to?

If you could take what you know now with you, what would you do differently?
