When i was younger, in the 80's, i had a book which involved a land of sweets and a chocolate river - not charlie and the chocolate factory. One of the characters - cant remember if they are human, falls into the river and is about to go over the edge of the chocolate waterfall but is saved by a donught. Can anyone remember this book and the title/author??!

I live in Peru and they dont sell them here, so I am going to buy them at B&N. I was wondering if they have illustrations like the Harry Potter books or any illustrations at all ? If so are they in the hardcover edition only or in the paperback also ?

I also found two different paperback editions one with the girl and the polar bear on the cover and another black with what appears to be a bear. Which to buy ??

Why do you think people write poetry? Why do you think people go to the trouble of working in the tight restraints of the sonnet template or in couplets when they could just write prose? I once wrote a paper on this very topic, and I am just interested to see why teenagers especially seem to pour their hearts out in verse. How about if some of you kids tell me why you feel the need for poetry rather than short stories? Just wondering ... Pax - C.

What is a good book for a female teenager to read. A book that keeps you thinking, and is not childish? Drama, mystery, sci-fi, are all good.

I once knew of a book written by one of the most successful salesmen ever, (I believe a former car salesman) -- not confessions of a Car Salesman, btw. Any thoughts, I need to find this book.

What would be the best example of their work? And what sub-genres do they write in? Feel free to list more than one.

I personally would put:

J. R. R. Tolkien (High/Epic Fantasy); "Lord of the Rings"
Orson Scott Card (Science Fantasy); "Enchantment," "Enders Game"
Terry Brooks (High Fantasy, Urban Fantasy); "Druid of Shannara," "Angel Fire East"
Elizabeth Moon (Military Sci-Fi); the "Vatta War" series

There's some other awesome authors out there, but those are the ones I would label as the ultimate masters of the trade. What about you?

Something just over the edge of reality, with a moral theme, provocative.... basically like a TZ episode. Seems like fantasy films today are either exaggerative horror or idiotic comedy.

Close for movies might be: Frequency, Pleasantville, The Lake House

Books:
Anita Shreve "The Last Time They Met,"
Alan Brennert "Kindred Spirits,"
Tim Krabbe, "The Cave,"
Alan Lightman, "Reunion,"
James Pratt, "The Last Valentine,"
Richard Matheson, "Somewhere in Time"

Thank you! I love this kind of thing - more please!!

In this life, we want nothing but facts, sir! nothing but facts!
The speaker, the schoolmaster, the third grown person present, all back a little, and swept their eye the inclined plain of the little vessels and there arranged in order, ready to have imperial gallons of facts poured into them until they are full to the brim.
Please explain what is the inclined plane of vessels and the connection to the brim! I grapped the idea but want further illustration to reach to fully conprehension. thanks.
