I must say I've been gladly surprised by Rowling's books. I thought it was just the usual pap that the proles love, but upon inspection I've found the series to deserve their praise. Rowling is not a master of the language, yet her lexicon is quite ample, more so than that of most current fantasy writers. Her grammar is a lot simpler than it used to be in Tolkien's times, and I'm not sure whether to feel grateful for that.
Beyond some lazy bits, like traveling back in time, a couple of Deus ex machinae, and the almost Star Warish climax of the fifth book (Order of the Phoenix), where wizards are throwing green and red lights left and right just like in Lucas's soap opera, overall the books are very good.
The themes are also close to the Lucas trilogy, and to Tolkiens: courage, compassion, friendship, love, fear of death as the great corruptor, faith as the great saviour, etc.
So what do you think? Will Harry Potter be as famous in 50 years as LOTR is now?
