MY HUSBAND IS AN ENGLISH TEACHER AND IT IS A REQUIRED READ WHERE HE TEACHES. HE TOLD ME THAT ALL THE CUSS WORDS DIDN'T SEEM TO BOTHER THE 9TH GRADES, BUT THE "N...." WORD SURE DID. THE REFUSED TO READ THAT WORD.

Lennie getting shot was the main part of the ban, but I also think some of the points in the book caused it to get taken off the shelves for a while, like the use of the N word and the question of whether or not Lennie was really a murderer for killing Curley's Wife. There are a few other things like treating mentally handicap people badly, stuff like that.

Wow... I read that book back in high school and didn't realize there was anything so controversial as to get it banned. The only thing mildly controversial in the whole story is the character of Lenny being mentally slow, but too strong for his own good.

I read that book in high school and it was one of my favorites.
I didn't know it was banned! There are somethings in it like that could be offensive but this country is getting way too sensitive to everything. It's just ridiculous. I mean that book was written I think in the 1930's or 40's, and as far as I know it hasn't caused any problems in any ones life. WHy 70-80 years after it is written, is it banned? unbe-freakin'-lievable

I read the book in high school also. I think when it is "banned", it is banned by a few conservative school districts, not all, nor it is banned by a majority.
