I like Charles Dickens' writing, but I've only ever read a few of his novels. Which one do you think is the best?

It was about two young girls that were in shipwreck back in the day of pirates.Their entire boat was lost except for them and two little children (1 baby and one toddler). It was about the things they did to survive & raise these little ones.

His eyes burned through mine
And I trembled.
I was no match
For a grown man.
Whatever my actions called for less
Consequence that this.
I sat in my room crying and healing and
Dreaming of one day’s revenge.
Praying I’d grow strong enough
To give it back to him.

I lifted and fought
Grew stronger and tougher.
Waiting for my chance.
When I grew strong enough
To take him down
I had also grown wise enough
To look him in his eyes
And see the fire was gone.
I shook his hand instead.

After reading "Where I Lived and What I Lived For" and "The Pond In Winter" from Thoreau's Walden, I was wondering if someone could clarify the concepts of Thoreau about the over-soul and the preference for nature over civilization?

Ive watched the films and read the book (many years ago) but just wondering if anyone had worked out how long the adventure actually lasts/takes for the hobbits? I mean the film you get to see the whole journey but has anyone worked out from the day Frodo leaves the shire, till after hes droppped the ring in the fire in the mount lasts? Its hard to judge cos it could be 2 weeks to 6 weeks! Im sure the must be a bit in the film that mentions the time theyve been away from home but i cant remember and im not trawling thru 12 hrs of dvd to find out!

My books have started to yellow, the pages themselves have yellowish markings. How do I make them less yellowish? Is there a way to return them to their pure white or at least a non yellowish color?

Cause I am trying to sell them during a charity event, but I doubt people will buy yellowish books....

I wonder if the English classics are for only the elite men/women of letters, that is, those formidable professors, scholars or students who read them at will for pure enjoyment, for learning or for advanced research.

I am not into science fiction/fantasy/horror/crime so please don't suggest any of these.

The kind of books I have enjoyed:
A suitable boy, Jane Eyre, The time-traveller's wife, My sister's keeper (but don't like any other Jodi Picouldt), Written on the body, The kite-runner.

Thank you!

Why would a prostitute not wish to fall in love? Even after she was offerred by this good woman a new, decent life? This prostitute, who is most determined to become a good woman, tries to persuade herself that she views Mr. R (the man she is attracted to) as a father? She tries not to fall in love with him, why? And is it possible for a prostitute to change into a better person? Or are they too phsycologically messed (though I'm sure they do have hope)? (The prostitute is like...18-19, the man is 35)
