Joking aside, if you had asked, in which book do I find a Miss Bennet? - , or where would I find the character Miss Elizabeth Bennet? - , then I would answer Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice.

First published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has consistently been Jane Austen's most popular novel. It portrays life in the genteel rural society of the day, and tells of the initial misunderstandings and later mutual enlightenment between Elizabeth Bennet (whose liveliness and quick wit have often attracted readers) and the haughty Darcy. The title Pride and Prejudice refers (among other things) to the ways in which Elizabeth and Darcy first view each other. The original version of the novel was written in 1796-1797 under the title First Impressions, and was probably in the form of an exchange of letters.

Well, everyone will say Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin. I, however, immediately think of my first love who features in my autobiography: Herbert Dungle: his formative years.

Elizabeth Bennet was the daughter of the gardener at St Olbroad’s Preparatory School for Sons of the Middle Classes. I had only been at the school for 3 days when I met her by the school’s compost heap. I had been set the punishment of turning it over because they said I had pushed the history teacher into the swimming pool (actually it was that horrible tick Harvey Oldroyd).

I was covered in mud, rotting vegetables and worms, and swearing excessively under my breath, as I stood up there before me was this beautiful girl. She giggled at the sight of me and so I threw a worm at her. She screamed and ran off.

I found out her name was Elizabeth Bennet and tried to talk to her again that day whenever I saw her, but she always ran off thinking I would throw a worm at her again. I was smitten though, I yearned and yearned for her. This was true love on my part. I would never love any other I vowed to myself.

That vow lasted for two hours, until I met Phyllis Hardbottom, the geography teacher’s daughter. Ah! What a beauty! But that story appears in my autobiography. You will have to buy it to find out more.

Are you trying to find an Elizabeth Bennet type? Good luck with that. I'm not sure there are too many women (or men) of that sort of literacy and sensibility any more. Wish there were...

I have one in the house, masquerading as my daughter. How rich are you? Mr. Bennett.
