What do you want to be when you grow up?It was the first question i can remember being asked by my Gran. I was six at the time and had the world at my feet, or so i thought!I couldn't make my mind up between a footballer or a truck driver like my Dad. i`d lived with my Gran for a while now and didn`t really know why except now and again my gran would say " don't worry, it wont be long till you are back home. Truth was i didnt want to "Go Home" Mum and Dad were big drinkers and the weekends were hell. I`d never drink i thought, never ever, after seeing what it did to my mum and dad, i didn`t want to be part of that! So, i lived with my Gran, thankfully, for many years until she died, then i had to go back home, to the rows, the spoilt sheets being washed on a Sunday morning and the violence that came with a very large hangover. This spilt over sometimes and affected my schoolwork and my lack of grades. I`d lost interest in driving a truck, like my dad and although i thoroughly enjoyed my football i always new i wasn`t quite good enough to make the grade. So, here i was at fourteen being asked the same thing by my Careers officer that was attached to the school. I was stumped! I honestly didn't know what i wanted to do and there was only two years or so to go before i left. A Manager i said! I would like to take charge and do something constructive!was my answer, now i had a purpose, again i had a dream, and you know what ? I became an Alcoholic! Just like mum and dad!
