I was at the local Whole Foods the other day, and I saw lots and lots of apples. There were local apples, but they were conventionally grown. Then there were organic apples from all the way across the country. Considering conventional apples have a fairly high pesticide residue, according to the EPA, which woudl be the more environmentally friendly choice--local but conventional or distant but organic?

The Met is funded by the state and directly by Londoners' Council Tax, so what is the point in fining the force? This indirectly fines Londoners. Will this come from the Met's budget, meaning policing in London will suffer a spending cut, or will it be paid by increasing Council Tax for Londoners?

Why don't they decide who the buck stops with (presumably Sir Ian Blair) and make him pay it personally?

"If you're looking for heroes, don't look to me. Don't look to Elizabeth. We have support. We have health care. We have the American people behind us," Edwards says. "Look to them. They are the ones who we speak for. They are the ones that we stand up for."

in theory i couldnt agree more, the working americans are the real heroes. but why ruin that by being quoted as saying we have no choice but to raise taxes. since when is giving the american public less of what they legitimately earn, "honoring them"? in the same vein, why is taxing their retirement(scoial security) equating national defense to peanut storage through funding and wasting valuable legislative time in congress through ridiculous pork spending tied to defense honoring the american public. if anything its surely picking their pockets.

I'm vegan, so I don't eat anything with milk, but many companies who have dark chocolate lines put milk or butter in them? Why? If someone wants chocolate with milk, why not just have milk chocolate. Plus, the milk completely negates the antioxidants in the chocolate?

Do they think it makes the chocolate taste better?

My husband decided to get me a puppy for my birthday. We found one we liked and I wrote a check for a deposite on this puppy and put it in an envelope right away. We found out the next week that we were pregnant!!! Later that week my husband sent out all of our bills, and with that the check. I realized what he had done right away and emailed her as soon as possible. I told her our good news and that we were not going to get a puppy at this time and asked her not to cash the check. She replied and said she does not give refunds on deposites. During all of our discussions she told me I could send as much as I'd like as a deposite and she NEVER stated that the deposite was non-refundable. She sent us a contract saying the deposite was non-refundable (which of course I did not sign!!). Is there anything legally we can do? I put a stop payment on this check before she deposited it but it still went through. We need that money, for God's sake we are pregnant. Am I just out of luck?!

House Bill 1804, known as the Oklahoma Taxpayer & Citizen Protection Act of 2007, goes into effect today Thursday, November 1, 2007. Here are some aspects of the new immigration law.
1.Public companies in Oklahoma will have to begin verifying the citizenship status of new employees.
2.The law makes it a felony to transport, hire, harbor, house or conceal illegal immigrants.
3.It requires local law enforcement officers to check citizenship status of anyone charged with a felony or driving under the influence.
4.It will end state-sponsored benefits for those who cannot prove they are legally in the United States.

I moved in to an apartment (the upper part of an old house; the landlords lived below) in August. There was no signed lease agreement, but I indicated that I would probably stay through May of next year. I paid a deposit as well as rent on the first day of each month.
Unfortunately the apartment turned out to be a health hazard. The bathroom had a black mold infestation, the cold water in the sink didn't work, sometimes I had no water, they turned off the heat for a week when they went out of town, and the bathtub did not drain at all (so I took a shower elsewhere for a month).
I gave them two weeks' notice and moved out November 1st.
They are not giving me my deposit back because they claim they are losing money by not having time to find a new renter. This is a lie because they have a second apartment they rent that has remained vacant since I moved in.
1) Is it possible to get my money back?
2) How do I report health code violations?

I'm supposed to open a little screw right above where you turn off the water for the sprinkler system and let that drain. It never seems to stop draining. Water keeps coming and coming so something is wrong. I just don't want my pipes to freeze or burst due to this little screw that I'm supposed to unscrew to let water out.
