The question basically asks to prove that the space of square integrable functions on the interval (-pi,pi) can be expressed as an orthogonal direct sum of odd and even functions. (I.e. given any function f belonging to the space, the function may be written as f(x) = k(x) + m(x), where k(x) is even and m(x) is odd, and where k(x) is orthogonal to m(x). )

My approach so far: I attempted to prove the orthogonality of k(x) and m(x) by expressing k(x) = (f(x) + f(-x)) /2 and m(x) = (f(x) - f(-x))/2 and taking their dot product (i.e. taking the integral of k(x)*m(x) over the interval of negative infinity to infinity). This approach did not seem to work as I ended up with the integral taken from -infinity to infinity of (f(x))^2 - (f(-x))^2, which I am not sure how to show is equal to zero.

The Twins

A woman, who was pregnant with twins, got into a car accident and went into a coma... She was rushed to the hospital where doctors delivered her twins to save them. But as she was in a coma and her husband was overseas on business, her brother was the only one present to name her children.

When she came out of the coma, hours after arriving at the hospital and found out that her brother had named the twins, she was very worried. Her brother was not very bright, and she didn't think he would have done a very good job of choosing her kids' names.

When he came in to see her she asked, "So what names did you choose for my children?"

He replied, "The first born was a girl."

"Oh," started the woman, "and what did you name her??"

"Denise," answered her brother.

The woman was very surprised, and very pleased, "Hey, that's not half bad!" She exclaimed to her brother. "And what did you name the second child?" She waited excitedly to hear the name her brother had chosen for the other child.

"Well, the next born was a boy," her brother informed her.

"Yes, and what did you name him??" inquired the woman.

Replied the brother,

"Denephew."

I have 5 basic fish in a 10 gallon aquarium. The filter is for a 10-30 gallon tank, so it is slightly oversized for this tank. It seems to create a strong current that the fish have to struggle against constantly to hold their place. So, do I need to run the filter 24 hours a day, or can I just run it, say 8 hours/day.

Thanks.

I'm not planning on having a baby any time soon, but I was just wondering if you liked the name Egypt.

I think it's nice, but I thought some feedback may be interesting.

We are flipping a house and the panel box has those old screw in fuses. One electrician wanted $1750.00 to update to a new one and that is not really in our budget. Why can't we just take out the panel box and clamp all of the wires for the house to the big wires coming into the house? I could save a ton of profit and if the new owners preferred a new panel box they could have it installed later.
