Crap! Are you saying we're "older"??? lol

Our insurance didn't cover sterilization and after having four kids we were totally DONE! Our choice was a financial one, his vasectomy was in the $700 range and a tubal for me would have been $4000. We did the math and made the appointment for him. We've been happily sperm free for over a year now and wooohooooo!

It all depends on the people involved. It is less evasive for a man to get snipped than for a woman to have her tubes tied. I know a guy that got snipped because his wife had two children by c section. He thinking was that she had been cut open twice, the least he could do is get the big v. On the other hand, my father in law believes that if a guy gets snipped it messes him up in the head. I don't really think that it matters on a medical level either way. It is just a personal decision that the couple has to make together.

It should be discussed by both parties, but in general it's less invasive, less expensive, and a shorter recovery time for the man to have a vasectomy than for a woman to have a tubal ligation.

After two pregnancy scares and the mutual decision that we didn't want to have kids, I basically pointed out that at 26 I was unlikely to find a doctor who would tie my tubes, so we could either continue with the birth control pills and run into the issue of "being late" again, or he could go get the procedure done. We talked it over, and he went in. My hubby's vasectomy is the best thing that ever happened to me. ;)

Having the falopian tubes tied in a woman is a more serious operation than having the vas deferens cut in a man - the latter being a walk in surgery operation.
I chose to have a vasectomy when I was about 39 after concluding that if I did get married again any kids would have to come with their mother who provide the childcare I did not enjoy. As it was I later married a woman who did not want kids. In that time before the AIDS invasion, it meant I did not have to consider whether a woman was REALLY on the pill.
I don't think it matters which one as long as both agree. The complications of trust and fooling around now involve more serious diseases.

I think the guy should get snipped! Its a much simpler procedure for the man. He doesn't have to be put to sleep, and its done in the actual doctor's office, where as women have to be admitted to the hospital and put to sleep. Men are just babies. They need to step up to the plate and get the snip.

not enough information supplied here. Why is this being considered. Have you tried birth control contraceptives? if all else fails the both of you should really talk about this issue together. A vasectomy is an outpatient procedure and tied tubes is a major ordeal. Consider the pros and cons involved in each.

For the woman, it's a serious operation; for a man, it's several minutes on an out-patient basis with only a few days of discomfort. If the two of you have discussed it thoroughly, it's 'easier' for the man to go through with a vasectomy. Plus, she'll love you way more for caring enough to do this yourself!

Well me and my husband are still very young but we already have two children and have decided that having only one more would be best. We discussed the the question of who should get "fixed" and we both decided that it would be best if we both did. I know it sounds weird but our resoning is that noone knows the future and if somewhere down the road we divorced and each got remarried to someone else, it would not be fair for one of us to be able to have children with our new someone and the other not to be because of a desicion that we had mutually made together. I know alot of people dont think this way but it's what we thought would be fair to both of us.

The person who will face less risk from the surgery.
Generally a man can have it done in a doctors rooms under local anaesthetic and leave immediately.
A patient at my hospital died recently from ligations of tubes surgery - usually a low risk operationg but it went wrong.

General anaesthetic is much more risky than a local anaesthetic.

I think men are just a but wierded out by the thought of having a needle stuck into their jewels.
I was late to pick up my husband after his vasectomy and he walked home with no problems!!

Well my husband and I went back and forth between which one of us were going to get "fixed" and before we could decide we found out we were having one more baby! LOL...needless to say I went in to get my tubes tied shortly after that. In all honesty, both procedures are quick and relatively painless. I don't think one has more responsibility than the other, if you're both done having children, someone needs to suck it up and get it done. For me, I didn't mind getting my tubes tied...at least I got my first nap in 7 years!
