Thinning hair?

In the past couple of years my hair has thinned considerably. It is about 1/4 as thick as it use to be if that. I have no history of baldness on either side of my family as far back as I know. I take better care of myself now then i ever have. What could be causing my hair to fall out in handfuls? Should I have it checked out?
