My friends and I are planning a week-long trip to NYC. We really don't want to spend our time sight-seeing; we're not that interested in tours or Statue of Liberty or anything. We don't want to be tourists, we want to see the real side of the city. We know there's plenty to do there, all the entertainment websites are just telling us tourist attractions, though. We want to really just have a great time and DO stuff in the city. Can anyone that's really familiar with the city give us some ideas?
One thing, we've found plenty of night clubs and such, but we need stuff to do during the day and during the week....
Thanks!!

I am planning a trip to NYC. Gosh! Hotels are so expensive in Big Apple. 3 stars hotel costs more than $220. It's a bit pricey for me. Some folks recommend me to stay at hotels in New Jersey, Flushing and Queens. What do you guys think? Is it a long commute? Is it safe to travel on the subway at night back to Flushing or Queens?

Which airport provide convenience access or closer to the City? Newark? JFK? LGA?

I've never been to New York personally so this is proving to be very difficult!
Thanks for any suggestions/websites/etc.

It's been a long time since I've been to NYC and I flew into La Guardia last time and Newark once before that. I remember it taking about an hour to get into Manhattan from both and the airports were uncomplicated and user friendly... What, in your opinion, is the best choice of airport, when flying in to NYC? Looking for info on the commute costs and time, especially from JFK since I haven't used it.

I live in a working class town in north-east England and I went to New York City in 2004 when I was 12. My grandparents took me and it was amazing. I hope I get a chance to go back one day and maybe even live there.
