My friends and I are planning a week-long trip to NYC. We really don't want to spend our time sight-seeing; we're not that interested in tours or Statue of Liberty or anything. We don't want to be tourists, we want to see the real side of the city. We know there's plenty to do there, all the entertainment websites are just telling us tourist attractions, though. We want to really just have a great time and DO stuff in the city. Can anyone that's really familiar with the city give us some ideas?
One thing, we've found plenty of night clubs and such, but we need stuff to do during the day and during the week....
Thanks!!

For starters you could try checking out the Union Square farmers market (Broadway and E. 17th st.), go walking through Central Park, go to the other Chinatown in Queens (take the 7 train to the end of the line) which is bigger than the one in Manhattan, but with no tourists and taking the ferry to Staten Island for views of downtown.

You could also head out to Coney Island and Brighton Beach (Little Odessa) for a Nathans Hot Dog, a walk along the boardwalk and some Russian food and music at a dinner show.

There's heaps more to do, but that's what I can suggest off the top of my head.

You should catch some of the outstanding museums with works of art only found In NYC. But go to Soho and Greenwich Village, there is always an adventure waiting to happen amongst all the great shops and sights there. Also don't forget about the 50% off ticket booth in Time Square, you can see a lot of great shows for half the price during the day!

Hit China town to get lots of fake designer stuff.. They only accept cash though.. Go see 9/11 site. If you are a fan of sex and the city, do the tour, it was pretty cool. Shopping on West 34th street was awesome.. Macy's, H&M, forever 21, you name it.. Make reservations at a nice restaurant.. ( Tao, serendipity 3) Tavern on the green is a tourist trap.. You could go skating at Rockefeller Center.. The empire state building tour was nice but we had an inside friend that got us in for free.. And as always, you must hit Times Square at night. The lights are amazing.. Also, try to see a play.. we saw Phantom of the Opera (it was amazing) Just a few ideas..

Agree with Dave-O in checking out Brighton Beach and Coney Island in Brooklyn. Rarely any tourists and its pretty authentic NYC.
