Try to avoid moving in the Bronx not very safe and Brownsville and east New York in Brooklyn. Rent is very expensive and it might take you a while to get a room or an apartment. You should start looking on craigslist.org they list room, shares and apartments for rent and its free not like most of the roomates sites. If you are going to work or study here try to look for something close because the subway rides take time. Manhattan is VERY expensive to live. Its very nice here

Well, NYC is a good city to consider. There are pros and cons. BUT it also depends what state or country you are coming from? And if you've never been to NYC you should consider visiting first.
NYC is full of everything. Rent IS expensive and depending on the neighborhood too. I would recommend the borough of Queens or Brooklyn.
New York is great. There is too much of everything...And of lot of ethnicity too! Which I love!!!

Parkslope is a nice place live, although it's expensive. Staten Island, Long Island, Roosevelt Island and The Rockaways are great if you like less crowded places. And Roosevelt Island and Staten Island are close enough to the city but without the craziness of Manhattan.

Try looking at http://www.moving.com/ They have a lot of resources listed for getting neighborhood info, job searches, buying a house or renting a place, etc. The USPS also offers moving guides that have helpful info on things you will need to do and when.

thing to figure out number one.... Where you will work, and how much money you will have.
Things are VERY expensive here.
For a peek at apartment prices see Craig's list

You should first try to figure out in what part of NYC you would like to live, since rents are pretty expensive....
