I am planning a trip to NYC. Gosh! Hotels are so expensive in Big Apple. 3 stars hotel costs more than $220. It's a bit pricey for me. Some folks recommend me to stay at hotels in New Jersey, Flushing and Queens. What do you guys think? Is it a long commute? Is it safe to travel on the subway at night back to Flushing or Queens?

Which airport provide convenience access or closer to the City? Newark? JFK? LGA?

Getting back to Jersey at night is NOT easy. For one thing, not all of the trains going back to Jersey run 24 hours. And cabs will be very reluctant to take you from Manhattan to Jersey -- it's not legal for them to do it, as I understand, and they'll charge you a lot.

The only reasonably close hotel in Brooklyn is the Brooklyn Marriott, and it's probably going to be more than $220. Someone I know recently stayed at the Milburn Hotel on the Upper West Side for under $200/night. I didn't see the rooms personally but I was told it was acceptable. (www.milburnhotel.com.) The hotels around Flushing are much cheaper and you'll probably be safe taking the 7 train back at night, unless you mean 3 a.m. or something very very late. The only problem is the train might take a long time.

A third option is to check craigslist or other sources and try to rent a room in someone's apartment. People do it.

I am plannning a trip to NYC right now too. It is definitely alot cheaper to stay outside the city and commute in. I am staying a a 3-Star hotel in Elizabeth, and then plan to take the airport shuttle from the hotel, back to the airport, and take the (i forget what its called) into the city, and it only a few bucks. (a like 20 minute commute) A cab ride would be like $65 if you didnt do this. The best bet is to fly into EWR, and stay in one the hotels there. LaGuardia hotels are no so nice...

If you are going to Flushing, Queens, then Fly into LGA.

Newark/Liberty airport is closer to most parts of Manhattan.
