I know all the lines that go from place to place IN the city, but someone told me you can take a boat to New Have, or to Bear Mountain. Does anyone know?

I'm from England - I'm visiting New York soon and I've heard they're really strict on ID in bars and so on. But I wanna get my drink on! So do you think bartenders etc would accept a UK driving licence with my date of birth and photo on or do i have to carry my passport everywhere? Cos I don't wanna do that, I'd only lose it.
Or would a photocopy of passport do?
Or will I be fine (I'm 26 but occasionally get IDd over here in England where the legal drinking age is 18!)

... I decide to keep my car? I keep hearing parts of Brooklyn is a good place to live if I want to keep a car (and not pay exorbitant parking fees). I know I don't need a car but having one would be nice for shopping trips, NJ trips, etc.

Hi! I plan to go to NYC soon for my internship in Manhattan...Would you know of any room for rent or maybe a hostel or dorm or any accomodation that is just reasonable in price? How much? My internship is near the Union Square. What's the safe place in NY? Where are the areas that I have to avoid?

And what is the best mode of transportation? how much should I expect to pay for a hotel room on the weekend? Is it best to take a tour to see the Statue of Liberty and ground zero, or should I just rent a car? any info would be great. I've never been to the big apple before and am going with my daughter for the weekend.

I'd like to find a decently priced hotel that is within a few miles of Yankee Stadium but that is also not in a "ghetto" kind of neighborhood and that is easily accessible to get to all the other attractions in NYC. Any ideas?
