I've stayed at the Big Apple Hostel, in Manhattan, and the Swiss129 Hostel, near Central Park...

Both were great - and you can find them and book them through Hostelworld.com

There is a pretty good youth hostel up 103rd and Amsterdam, you may want to check on that though. A friend of mine has stayed there several times, she always felt safe and liked the enviroment there. I believe it would be under youth hostelling international but again you'd have to check since I never stayed there. Hope that helps. It's also close to the 1-9 and the park.
