And what is the best mode of transportation? how much should I expect to pay for a hotel room on the weekend? Is it best to take a tour to see the Statue of Liberty and ground zero, or should I just rent a car? any info would be great. I've never been to the big apple before and am going with my daughter for the weekend.

First off, the cheapest hotel I know of is the pod hotel (formally known as the pickwick arms) right off of time square on 51st bet 2nd and 3rd ave. Bunk beds run about 150 a night. (You won't find cheaper in the city for the location. I promise you). The rooms are the size of shoeboxes but you didn't come to the city to stay in a room all day did you? The rooms are safe and you are in walking distance to time square and you have access to trains too.

DO NOT RENT A CAR!!! If you are not a native of the city, you will get a ticket and/or towed. Driving in the city is crazy. If you are not used to it, then you will have problems. The city has the best mass transit in the US. You don't need a car and gas is rediculous here as well. (In manhattan, there are only 50 gas stations for the whole island) get yourself a metro card and save money. You can take the trains and buses with it.

I would take a city bus tour of all the major sites, which shouldn't take that long. Then you can decide where you want to go indepth later on.

I would also pick up a Zagats guide. It will tell you the best places to eat in the city and you can find a cuisine you like at your budget. If you dig chinese, the best dirt cheap chinese joint is Wo Hop on 17 mott st. Don't confuse it with the above ground Wo Hop next door. It is pretty much in a basement and the decor is not much, but the food is wonderful at those prices. Anyways, have fun and welcome to the city.

You should stay somewhere in Manhattan, get the real feel of the city. Don't stay somewhere you can't trust in some bad parts of the city. I'm sure there's a Hilton or something over there. I used to live in Manhattan and it would probably be best if you would take the subway and taxi around because traffic can really back you up. If you're not so sure about the safety of some local subways, rent a car. And for the Statue of Liberty, I think the best thing to do would be to book a nice boat ride over to the island, but don't go on a tour. You should take your time and do what YOU want to do.

The Doubletree Metropolitan goes for about $270, by the way. I have yet to spend over $200 for four star hotels in NYC and I've been there about 12 times in the last four years, you just have to know what Internet sites to use.
Stay in midtown, you don't want a car there, believe me. The subway will take you to World Trade or anywhere else quickly and cheaply. You can get day passes also. Once at World Trade you can walk south and book the Statue of Liberty tour that includes Ellis Island.

Get a very cheap hotel! (if thats possible)! I warn you, I live in NEw York City and you need to be very rich to survive there (if you get an apartment). There is lots of places you might get the urge to spend so i hope you've saved up some money. Restaurants, shopping, tours, hotels it all adds up. To go the statue of liberty, i dont think that they have tours, They have a ferry to get there but i think thats it. When I was younger (like 7) my family went there and we walked around on our own, and we didnt see tour guides anywhere.Anyway, the best mode of transporation is a taxi, bus, or tourist bus. NEVER use your own car because you will NEVER find parking unless you've lived here for a while. SO there you go. SOme places I suggest visiting is Soho, Broadway, Wall Street, Madison Square Garden, Times Square, 5th avenue. etc. Have fun in the Big Apple! Even though its expensive it sure is fun to be here!

Forget the car. You can take buses everywhere.

Try the Doubletree Metropolitan. You might find it for $139/night+taxes.

Have fun. Dress warmly.
