I'm from England - I'm visiting New York soon and I've heard they're really strict on ID in bars and so on. But I wanna get my drink on! So do you think bartenders etc would accept a UK driving licence with my date of birth and photo on or do i have to carry my passport everywhere? Cos I don't wanna do that, I'd only lose it.
Or would a photocopy of passport do?
Or will I be fine (I'm 26 but occasionally get IDd over here in England where the legal drinking age is 18!)

Sorry but your passport is your best bet. Occasionally, the person at the door may accept a foreign license or ID card if they can easily read it and find the birth date. It really depends where you go and who happens to be checking IDs that night. If you are a very young looking 26 than you may have even more problems since they may be more suspicious that it's a fake. Oftentimes, bouncers have been known to turn down valid IDs belonging to US citizens because they are from a state other then NY since many fake IDs are made to look like 'out of state' IDs in hopes that the bounces will not be familiar with them. Many NYC college students are forced to carry around passports because many bars do not accept student ID cards even with a photo and birth date. You can try to use your license and you may not have any problems but the passport is best. The photocopy will NOT work but you could try using it along with your license and see what happens.

Keep in mind that if you plan on going out to bars or clubs, Friday and Saturday nights are the nights you can expect the most 'security'. Weeknights are a little bit more relaxed, especially if you hit the bar in the afternoon.

The NYPD is doing a crackdown on clubs and bars mainly because of the death of Imette ST.Guillen. Bars will not take a chance and lose their liquor license. The bouncers may not believe your id is real. Also, your drivers license won't be considered a legal form of ID in NY because it was not issued by any of the 50 states or the US govt. Only your passport will be considered legal ID. A photocopy of your id is a sure fire way of not getting to drink.

As long as your photo id has your date of birth on it, there shouldn't be an issue. Most places won't accept a photocopy of a passport because those are fairly easy to forge.

your gonna need to bring your passport along. Often they will ask for a second form of ID if you use foreign ids so i think you need to bring both. It totally depends on what bouncer you hit at the bar some barely check some are very careful.

While I've never been to NYC...if you're 26, I don't foresee much problem with using your drivers license as long as your birthdate is readily visible and readable. I'm sure there more than most places in the use, they're used to seeing IDs from other countries.

No such place - you are looking at one of the heaviest patrol areas in the city. Much better chance if you are not in midtown.
