From Manhattan, take the FDR Drive (or 2nd Ave if the FDR is a big cluster parking lot) to the Queensborough Bridge/61st Street exit. Once off the exit, make a left turn at the first traffic light, which is York Ave. Go under the bridge and make a right at East 59th Street. Go up 59th street and make a u turn to enter bridge. Once off bridge, you will be at Queens Plaza, go straight to get to Queens Blvd. Make a left at the 3 way intersection of Thomson/Van Dam and Queens Blvds and take that to Interstate i495 (instead of picking it up at Van Dam, which is usually very heavy). If the LIE/I495 is very heavy, use the service Road (Horace Harding) after passing the 108th Street exit.
Or, while off the Queensboro bridge, stay left to Northern Blvd. Take Northern to the Grand Central Parkway (after passing 111th Street) south out to Long Island.

Depends where you want to go. I tried finding a route from Manhattan to Levittown, and found that the easiest is to go through Queens Midtown Tunnel, but you have to pay the toll when you go on I-495. An alternative way to avoid the toll is to go on 59 St Bridge. My recommendation is to use mapquest.com where there's an option that you can select to avoid tolls.

confident, yet you will spend greater in gasoline than you will save in tolls. Take US 9W to Albany, go the Dunn Memorial Bridge and then take US 9 South to the Bronx. Take some city loose bridges to Queens. You further greater or less 3 hundred miles on your holiday to maintain $12.

The only toll free bridge is the 59th Street Bridge which you access on on 2nd Ave and 59th. Both the midtown tunnel (34th street & 1st ave) & tri-boro (96th street off the FDR) have tolls
