... I decide to keep my car? I keep hearing parts of Brooklyn is a good place to live if I want to keep a car (and not pay exorbitant parking fees). I know I don't need a car but having one would be nice for shopping trips, NJ trips, etc.

Having a car in NYC: There is MORE to having a car in NYC than parking fees. Insurance is RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Registration is annoying, the DMV is more crowded than you would ever imagine. It's crowded ALL DAY. There is no good time to go. You'll be waiting either way. Heavy traffic on most freeways.... Brooklyn is the best by far, however, Brooklyn has it's downside too for parking----Alternative side of the street parking (something unheard of in most areas) -- It's very intricate and tricky system Brooklyn has for street cleaning. For instance: You don't want to be on the north side of the street on Tuesdays before 8am OR ELSE you get a ticket automatically. Different blocks have different parking rules with posted parking signs. It can be a head ache. Those cops are relentless when it comes to ticketing with that as well as METERS. Meter parking is every where and many people try to get away with not paying for the meter and get ticketed. Even if they left their car for 5 minutes. Another bad side? DOUBLE PARKING invented by the Brooklynites. Literally parking your car right beside other parking spots WHICH LITERALLY BLOCKS traffic and makes horrible traffic itself. More tickets, more money for the city. It can be just as chaotic in Brooklyn, so driver--beware. Be safe! I do not truthfully believe there is a good place to own a car in NYC unless you live in Long Island or Staten Island (suburban areas)... good luck!

Brooklyn, Queens, & Staten island have the most space & so the most opportunity to find affordable parking. The further out, the better.

Honestly, the best place to keep a car in NYC is Staten Island. Mainly because it is more residential/suburbia like than the other boroughs. However, you will have that bridge toll to contend with. All of the other boroughs are tough to keep a car in.
