Is it really as bad as people make it own to seem(shootings, drugs, gangs). Every time I see pictures of it all I see is rediculously big houses and nice cars. whats the real deal about compton?

If anyone has kids attending or kids that attended Santa Monica High School, if you could give me some feedback on your experiences with this high school. I'll be moving to L.A with my younger sister, and I am considering this school. Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Hey, I'm going on a cruise in december and still have to book a night at a hotel in LA.
I don't really want to book a hotel in san pedro (where our port of call is) because I hear it is all industrial. I would like to stay somewhere nearby yet, with something fun to do in the meantime. Any ideas? Thanks.
