If anyone has kids attending or kids that attended Santa Monica High School, if you could give me some feedback on your experiences with this high school. I'll be moving to L.A with my younger sister, and I am considering this school. Any info. would be greatly appreciated. I realize this is the "travel" category, I'm posting here in hopes L.A locals see my question. The "Education and Reference" section wasn't much help.

Hi...well, Santa Monica High School is in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. I'm in the same school district, but at Malibu High School.

...it's a LOT better than the Los Angeles Unified School District...
LAUSD has a lot of financial situations/overcrowding at the moment and the academics in that school district are reputed to be very low in national standards.

Anyways, some negatives about SM High is that there is a lot of racial conflict/fighting if you know what I mean. But the academics are well above average.

My recommendation: Not that SM High is that bad, but look into other Westside Los Angeles high schools. They are better ones out there to choose from.

For the most part it is one of the best in the area. Although they have had racial tentions between Black and Mexican students.
But I hear this is happening a many schools. My son is 16 and attends Samo he is half white and half mexican but stays away when things get out of hand. One of the counselors their was my 3rd grade and 5th grade teaacher from another S.M. school.
Her name is Sue Dresser and I am sure she would talk to you and answer anymore questions. Oh yes by the way the police station is across the street and also have an officer on campus with his own office. Good luck.

It isn't bad. At least it falls outside the L.A. Unified School district, and there are enrichment opportunities available. If you are moving to the westside of L.A., it is probably one of your two best bets among public schools nearby, the other being Palisades High.
