Check the LA Weekly if you are in town, or find there website - it might be laweekly.com. Its a free weekly city paper, and it has EVERYTHING ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING IN LOS ANGELES. You can find them in small shops, stores, liquor stores and some newsstands. It has restaurants, movie listings for probably every movie theatre in the area , jazz spots, poetry readings, weekly concerts a bar, comedy, club section, even the fetish, bondage and S & M clubs.
If you are looking for real local stuff go to www.craigslist.com. Click on Los Angeles. On the top left hand corner there is a section that says 'community events' people post all kinds of local stuff there.
AOL has a section called City Guides, you can search by date and areas of interest (eg, dining, sports, music, etc.) You can find all the types of stuff that would be in a travel guide, and you can search for stuff the day of. They have reviews and everything, including contact information and pricing.

squeezeoc.com is my favorite. It helps to find stuff to do any day of the week. It also has great restaurant info.
