Well....
As other people mentioned, you MUST visit some beach communities while in SoCal.
Beach side towns:
In San Diego, La Jolla, meaning "The Jewel" in Spanish..(.the name does truly fit its description)...is one of the towns you should visit. It's an affluent area renown for some of the best beaches.
If you're looking in Los Angeles beach communities, Santa Monica and Malibu are the ones to go to. (and on the plus side, many celebrities live around there...)
and VENICE BEACH in L.A. or It's a fun place to walk around and buy stuff...they have..interesting things to see.
Amusement Parks if you're interested:
SeaWorld, San Diego
Disneyland, Anaheim (Orange County)
Knott's Berry Farm (Buena Park, Orange County)
Six Flags Magic Mountain or Six Flags Hurricane Harbor (Valencia, in Los Angeles).
Universal Studios (Universal City, in Los Angeles).
Pacific Park/Santa Monica Pier (Santa Monica in L.A.)
Shopping:
of course....Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. 3 blocks of one of the most expensive shopping districts in the world. Even if you can't afford, it's fun window shopping and just looking.

Wow... only a week! Well, you can certainly see some highlights...
Obviously Hollywood, Beverly Hills, etc. I recommend the Roosevelt Hotel right across from the Kodak theatre-- great location, great history and reasonably priced. Take a walk on the Promenade and the pier at Santa Monica. You can take a great drive through the canyons too.
I love Long Beach-- you can tour the Queen Mary. And, you can also catch a ferry out to Catalina island, which is a great place for a day trip or an overnight stay.
And, of course there is San Diego-- with the mission district, the beaches, the waterfront and the zoo.
So much to do with so little time!
Have a great time!

This depends, of course, on your ages, where you are coming from, and your interests. The obligatory things for tourists are Disneyland, Hollywood, Rodeo Drive, the Beach, and the Getty Museum(s). If you are young, female, and like shopping, I would recommend Melrose Ave. and the Beverly Center. I haven't been for a couple of years, but like Venice Beach on a warm weekend day, and the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica is always lively - one of the few places in L.A. where people walk. Someone mentioned La Jolla (they misspelled it), which is more sedate, and has a lot of art galleries - it is a very upscale area near San Diego, in a very pretty area. We have lots of sports, lots of ethnic communities with interesting shops and restaurants. You could go over to Catalina Island or, I think at this time of year, whale watching. It really depends on you!

Venice/Santa Monica (3rd St.)
*check out funky shops by day, then to 3rd st. promenade for street entertainers, star sightings, shopping, and dinner.
Joshua Tree Nat'l monument
*If you like hiking, a day amongst the rock formations is worth the drive. You can stop in Palm Springs while you're out there.
Disneyland
Laguna Beach, San Clemente, La Jolla
*take a tour of the best beaches, then stop to eat in La Jolla. If you feel like partying keep going south to San Diego and check out Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach areas.
Hollywood stuff.
*see the tourist sites, then watch a movie at the Chinese theater.
have fun!
